Quick question here as I've just got my hands on a MAF Translator GenII along with a GM MAF. But doing some research and now I have the impression that with this MAF Translator I could actually ditch the MAF sensor and go MAP sensor. Am I right in thinking I could do this?

From what I can read, I can get a GM air temp sensor and a GM MAP sensor, along with a speed density harness and get the benefits of a MAP system. Note that I have an early Evo so I can't use anything like DSM Link. I am using an Ostrich chip emulator along with the Tunerpro RT software.

Just seems like it could be too good to be true and was wondering what people's thoughts on it were.

I run Maft gen2 and it has treated me fairly well. I think Maft Pro only has provisions for speed density. Since you're already running Ostrich have you looked into Jackal?

Nice idea, but the early Evo ECU code is very different from the DSM code so Jackal would not work unless there was a rewrite of the code.

I must be getting mixed up with MAP and speed density. but wouldn't it mean I could do away with the MAF and just run GM MAP sensor + GM air temp sensor?

Hmm...I'm not sure if I follow, MAP and speed density are the same thing. The nice part about the Gen2 is the ability to adjust by 0.5% and at 400RPM ranges. You also have the wideband tracking option, which is a neat feature. The only thing you don't have is timing control(which you didn't have before correct?) :hmm:. Speed density would be nice, but how compatible is it with the early evo ecu, I'm not too sure. :)

Sorry - am probably not making this so clear as I'm not so clear about it myself. From what I can gather, I can actually ditch the MAF I have and run the following setup:

MAP sensor + GM air temp sensor -> MAF Translator -> ECU

The Gen2 is compatible with the early Evo ECU as a friend was running it as a simple way to control fuelling on his previous setup. Just wanted to check whether my theory above about how the setup could work is valid.

Maft Gen2 doesn't have the provisions for speed density. I believe Maft Pro does though. Check out fullthrottletech.com and see what Bob has to say, he'll straighten you out. :rocks:

From what I see, as Dustin already mentioned, the MAF-T Pro is the only of the three to support speed density. A speed density setup involves using a MAP and IAT sensor instead of a MAS/MAF, which is what you want to do.

If you're willing to wait a little bit, the guys at ECMtuning are working on a version of ECMlink that works with Evo I-III ECU's and will probably have all the same functionality as their current version, which supports speed density.

Ahhh... you may be right on the first one. As I am getting the Gen2 for cheap I'll just go for the GM MAF setup for now.

I've heard quite a bit about ECMLink, and I've actually recently sent them an Evo III ECU for testing on it!

You need the Maf-pro to run SD. ...
I've owned all 3 translators
Maf-pro is the best of them all, but for a very good tunning tool I wouldn't pass up the Gen II I liked it alot just wanted to go maf less...
with the gen II you can run just about any maf you could ever want...
If you have any Q's about the Gen II feel free to ask I'd be more than happy to help you out...
If you REALLY want to goto a maf-less set up I would go with the Pro mainly for the fact that it has been around ALOT longer then the finally released v3
Not that theres any problems with it just my 0.02

I thought the GenII couldn't do that and it was only the MAF Translator Pro that could do it.

I tried it didnot work thats why i ditched the gen 11 and switched to jackal, dont get me wrong its a nice piece tho

So have you actually used it the GenII in MAP mode, as if you have had success I think a lot of people would like to know how.

I run a maf pro right now myself and it works well. i thinking im ditching it tho and going aem ill know friday if anyones intrested let me know or has an questions about the pro

Really!? I'm sorry, I may have lost your contact information! :( Please contact me again offline. We're sending out beta versions now and I would DEFINITELY like to have your feedback if you're interested.

The one thing I want to point out, though, is that the current early EVO version is our "lite" package. Which means it does not have SD yet, although that can be very high on our list to add if guys in the early EVO market are interested.

Thanks,

I just sent you an email. Would be very interested in testing the beta ECM Link. I do think SD would be very popular with the early Evo crowd, especially because in most countries where the early Evos are, there availability of the GM MAF is not so good. As you can tell by this thread, I've got one but it's not fitted yet.
