what all does the ems unit do?

I'm selling my car for 8k, I have saved up an aditional 3k. with the 3k I can buy a 90 tsi awd, so I have 8k to fix the car up with. I was reading some posts that said that it does everything even controlls boost. considering this unit is 1400, that would cost just as much as all the other stuff if i didn't go stand alone. If it controlls boost how do you change it when your driving?

AEM EMS unit is a standalone that replace your stock ECU. You can control boost via software hooked up to the laptop.

so I nedd a laptop to controll my boost? this will be a street driven car, I was going to get the dual s blitz boost controller, and safc, 2g mass. this will eventually have a gt12 turbo and a 9.0:1 cp built engine. I dont know what engine management to go? what all would I need to run the ems? I dont have a labtop, I was going to go somewhere to get it tunned, plus I dont want to have a lap top in my car just when I wnat to set the boost.
