Hi folks, a quick question... Sorry for starting a totally new thread about this subject, but at the moment I dont have much time to spend at the computer and searching .

So Im going to turbo my european 4g63 GS with the stock GS-T parts since they are pretty much bolt ons with few smaller conversion about the project It seems that I can't avoid the emission test because its impossible to show that the 4g63t passes the european/cali emission standards from factory. The law says Ill have to pass the emission limits after its turboed. This means the car will be wired with sharp sensors that measure the co2 and particle levels when reving on a dynometer up to 60mph.

I was wondering that Im not taking the risk of not passing the test. So if I go with the 450cc, stock exhaus manifold, stock bov, GS/GST cams, T25, 2G turbo MAF and 95 eprom gs-t ecu whats the probability im going to fail it. The emission standards are as far as I know as high as they're in california.

wHY CANT YOU SHOW THAT THE GST WILL PASS EMISSIONS IN CALIFORNIA? iF YOU GET A CALI ECU AND ALL THE CORRECT EVAP STUFF THEN YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET THAT DOCUMENTATON FROM THE CALIFORNIA DMV. tHEN HAVE YOUR CAR TESTED AND SHOW THAT YOUR CAR WOULD HAVE PASSED THE TEST EVEN IN CALI.
EDIT: Sorry about the caps I didnt realize until I hit send.

Edit 2: Recap the issue. You have to either turbo your current setup and show no more than a 20% Hp increase OR do a complete swap to a GST platform correct? All you need is the emmisions info from a factory GST of the same year in order to be legal on the GST swap?

well If they are judging you based on the turbo motor standards and you have all of your vacuum lines hooked up you should be okay. I would suggest having a pretest done since they are cheaper, don't get sent to the dmv, and can help spot potential problems. Another thing to see is if the smog tech is a good guy he might be willing to run the car in "manual mode". This could potentially be cheaper (and if you turn up the charm, free) and could also help you spot potential problems. Also make sure all of your settings such as base idle speed and base timing are set properly.

I already asked about this thing on the newb section but I was advised to search for tips from people who have had their heavy customized smoggers passed.

Tenn yes the power increase is calculated from a gst/gsx and it is "possible" to do the swap if I get right documents straight from mitsu with their stamp on it. thats what they said when I went there yeasterday asking about it.I tried to get the statement with the papers you gave me but they were useless. No the only option is to run illegal or get the super emission test done. The first one is worse cos where I live cars are often stopped and inspected for illegal turbos. The test is something like 3000 usd more or less depending on how many runs theyll have to do to get it measured.:ohdamn:

well I tried to find an email address for california vehicle department but found only odd phone numbers.

Department Motor Vehicles. From what I understand, you live in Europe correct?

Im just speculating that will those "stock" mods just bolted on raise my emission level above the CA standards. If someone in the states called the DMV and asked for the statement on a paper and sended me it to me via fax/post/scanner/email it would be awesome :hellyeah:. Seems like they are hiding from spam because there are no email addresses on their web site.

Yep thats the same website i searched. They only have the automated email system which cannot answer to this kind of spesific questions.

Make sure to have your catalytic converter and EGR system intact. It also helps to drive the car hard before the emissions testing to really heat up the cat. Other small things to help pass is having up-to-date maintenance on your car [i.e. plugs, wires, o2 sensors]. You'll want to check your spark plugs for correct gap and condition. Obviously you don't want to have any DTC's/CEL on. Good luck!
