Your best bet is to start calling around. Google, Yellow pages. Search tools are great solutions to your problems. If your going to race the car I would get in contact with TRE or SHEPTRANS.com - Home

I typed in Trannsmission Shops in LA CA on Google and 5 pages came up with local shops for you.

I don't know about who does what local. As far as I know RRE doesn't to transmissions anymore.

If you want a top notch build Project 2G already mentioned two leading shops. As I see it this is the list of the leading three.

1. TRE I have had a great experience with them and I love my trans.
2. Shep Transmissions They make them to hold big power.
3. Jacks Transmissions They seem to be a little cheaper than the other two and people have had good things to say.

One more thing, if you want to find used transmissions, search Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market . They are a nation wide junk yard search engine. You can refine your searches to how ever far away the location is, price and condition. They will usual list the mileage from the donor vehicle and condition. But, personally, I would go with one of the shops mentioned above for a respectable rebuild.
