Hey guys! As the title says I need to pass that damn thing in order to get plates for my newly acquired car. I got an '89 turbo Colt from a wrecking yard a couple of weeks ago and now it is a PITA to process the papers. I 've been wanting that car for quite a long time but they are getting pretty scarce and I can't just go to other state to pick one up which limited the options even further. Anyway.

If anybody knows the procedure itself, please clarify it for me since I don't even know what exactly is involved. Does the car need to be driveable or it will suffice to just tow it there and turn the lights on and step on the brakes? And if anybody has any particular place in mind, let me know as well. I thought it was gonna be done at a DMV or CHP but when I paid the fees they told me that I 'll have to find a shop 'out there' to do it. Thanks.

P.S. You can shoot me a PM if you prefer so.

Go there and read up. You will be spending about $120 to get the test done. Its something like $60 for brakes and $60 for the light test. Then you must take the car to the CHP/DMV and they have to check the VIN on everything to make sure its a legit car. You must get it smogged as well.

I am in the same process with my mighty max right now.

All kinds of fun. I still have brake and lights, CHP and smog to do. So far, I have gotten my truck weighed. All the while, driving on an expired red #2 tag because the car is up on jacks. Hopefully that will change this weekend. Money is the main issue. I have dropped neary $2,000 on my 97 GSX in the last month and on top of that I just purchased a 91 GSX. Now I dont have the money to make Max legal.

Damn lucky to find one of those in this area... I've been trying to for a few years now, as modding my N/A Mirage is looking more overwhelming every time I consider it.

Wouldn't happen to be drivable, would it? And if so, wouldn't happen to be black? Saw a colt running around on the freeway with zip ties and bungee cords holding the hood down, but it still had a good 3-inch gap at the front. No power bulge in the hood, so maybe... ;)

Not currently drivable. Needs and engine and some minor body work. May have a bumper cover for free, white but it will work for now until I paint it. Might have an engine soon as well, in the next couple months. Fender might be repairable, we will see. Has new tires, decent rims ( going to paint black with silver lip ).

Heh. Actually, I meant the Turbo Colt.
But hey, cool! I've never seen a RED 1Ga with the 'trimless' option. Just white and black ones.

I dont know if the hinges are rusted or what. I know something was wrong with one of them because the fender was damaged by the door being opened. I have not physically seen the car yet. I was supposed to pick it up earlier today but rain, transmission work on my other car and the inability to find a truck to tow the car with has hampered the pickup. next weekend I will be grabbing it and giving it a good going over to see what all needs done.

So far, I know of these.

Front bumper ( should have one coming )
Hing on door
Driver side fendor
bare minimum of a bottom end

Sorry, I was really busy for the last week with work and the monthly sale at the junk yard:)

Yea, I consider myself lucky too even though some of my car buddies said that it was not smart to buy it for that condition and price. It is actually a 'standart' white. I didn't even know they were available in black. The only turbo ones I saw were ether white or red.

Not driveble at all so far:( When I saw it at a yard first time it was almost complete but it took me a few days to really make up my mind. By that time the top of the motor was gone as well as some of the interior.
I don't care much for those parts. It is no biggie for me to throw a head on it. The main thing that is slowing me down is that somebody cut off part of the ingine wire harness in the meantime. Not the whole thing but that branch that goes towards the ignition components, injectors, coolant and 02 sensor. I don't think it is a hard thing in itself either but it made my brain hurt so far. Damn, I should 've paid more attention in the electricity class few years back when I was in college.. I already got a missing part from a '90 turbo DSM which is supposed to be close. It is kinda but I still have 4-5 wires that don't color match to anything on the Colt. I hope to straighten it out withing the next week with enough patience.

Heh. Why I picked up a full '90 harness.. apparently it's stupidly easy to just pull the 1.6L and drop in the 2.0L from the same year, even if the ECU and engine harness need to be swapped too.

Down side is the 'extra' bits that are needed to convert the 1.5L to the 1.6 or 2.0L... engine-tranny spacer plate, the motor mounts off the 4G61t... in general, everything that already comes with the turbo mirage, that I'll have to track down or barter with satan for to convert my little NA Mirage. :b
But I so very want the 'OMGWTF' factor when you peel out in third on drag radials. :D
