hey yall, ive searched, and couldnt really find much info. Anyone with a TRE built trans, the 2400 one. would that be a good Daily Driver, and occasional Track? or would the Shep Built trans be the way to go?

Also Can I buy the 2400 TRE, outright. then send them my trans for the 300 Refund? or do I have to send them back a Core.

Also, anyone buy the 1800 TRE trans? I guessing its a Rebuilt Stock Trans. but for about 300 more. I can have a Semi Race Tranny.

every one around here is Quoteing me 1700 for Rebuilt Stock Trans. FOOK THAT! ill rather put down some more cheese and get a fully built trans.

Send your trans to Shep and have it rebuilt for $850. Allow for replacement parts that aren't part of the rebuild. Never know what you are going to find. Doesn't matter WHERE you drive your car, if Shep built it, it's good. I've got a tranny by him. 1-2 shifts at WIDE OPEN THROTTLE, 8000rpm, NEVER LIFT TO SHIFT, PURE BUTTER.

Can you say 1.59 60's on street tires and a Shep tranny? I can :thumb: Nuff said.

I think im going to send it to Shep, Whats his Turn around time????

how long was the turnaround time for the tranny? My gsx's tranny is gave this weekend. I've had a grinding 2nd gear since I bought the car last year and this weekend my 5th gear and reverse gave. I can no longer drive on 5th gear nor put it on reverse. I'm curious to know what his turnaround time is and if he charged you anything extra from the $850 standard quote.

I had my 91 TSi FWD transmission rebuilt by Shep, and I have to say that was the best decision I ever made. I sent the transmission to him via Fed Ex, and he had it shipped back to me about 3 days later. So that's about 4 days shipping (2 days there, 2 days back), 3 days at Shep's. Now that's service! I would definitely recommend him. And it shifts beautiful...

Also, there were no extra charges for anything. What he quoted me was exactly what it cost. I think it was about $67 for shipping by Fed Ex, for me. So I included that over and above the $850 rebuild fee, but that was it.

was ur Trans Broken at the time you sent it???? or was it in running conditon???

If you are asking about my transmission, it still shifted but I had over 140000 miles on it, and the car had been sitting for about 3-4 years without moving. The engine needed some work, so I thought I would get the transmission rebuilt at the same time, as long as I had it out of the car. I definitely did not want to take that thing out again in a few months.

I asked if anything major was wrong with the transmission when I had Shep rebuild it, and he said nothing major was broken, it was just worn. So all the standard parts listed in his rebuild price were used. So now it is like new, and I am putting an FP3052 turbo on my car right now, and I expect it to handle that:)

thanks for the info. i'm definately going with shep. it's just too bad that it had to happen in winter and I just can't work on it until the weather warms up again(spring)

I know exactly how you feel. I too have my project on hold until Spring, because of my blasted unheated garage. I want to try out that FP3052 turbo, race FMIC, GM MAF translator (blow through) Tial WG and BOV, etc. But I can't install them until it gets warmer out.

And I think you will be happy with a Shep built transmission. I know I am. I would be sure to package it good before shipping though. Fed-Ex has some pretty strict rules about shipping something that heavy. They made me open the box and show them how I packed it before they would ship it. I packed it in a box-within-a-box. The inner box was a 17" monitor box, and I put that in a 24" cubed box. I put styrofoam blocks and peanuts (peanuts alone won't be accepted, according to Fed_Ex) around the inner box. And I packed more styrofoam around the transmission itself in the inner box. That seemed to work out ok.

Im thinking of Buying the TRE shipping Box.

That would work too. Actually, I wish I had done that. It would have saved a ton of time packaging it. And the price really isn't bad for their shipping box...

The trans i sent Shep was in HORRIBLE shape. I yanked it out of my parts car. I knew all the gears grinded, but didn't have a clue as to the carnage inside. I ended up replacing 1st gear, 3rd gear, reverse, and had to put in an entirely different center diff (welded). That carnage added about $1000 to my build :( But other than that, everything went without a hitch. I sent him my tranny 2 weeks before the Shootout, trans was in the car 2 days before the Shootout. Delay was waiting for the billet forks and steel end rails (which never showed up).

Good idea on the bin.

Shep is a great guy with 100% feed back in my DSMing years. His turn around is faster then anyone and his attention to detail is far beyond some of these unstaffed over welmed shops.

Use shep.

yah, what is the diffrence???? I checked TRE websight, and I dont see anything saying Rebuilt trans for 1300, I see the base model, for 1800 Twards the bottom.

wat is the difference between the $895 shep rebuilt tranny and the tre $1800 rebuild? i know there is a $900 difference between the rebuilds, but is it worth it to go with the tre rebuild? also, wat other parts are necessary to get along with the base model rebuilds from shep? im pretty sure we dont need to get the other goodies unless you drag race very often. thanx in advance.

The difference is..... for $895 you send Shep your tranny and get a basic rebuild that's listed on his site. Shep then sends you back your ORIGINAL tranny. With TRE, for $1800, you don't send anything in. You get a transmission delivered to your house that has pretty much the same mods done to it as a Shep tranny. You are paying $900 for a used transmission that has been inspected and rebuilt. I would imagine if any of the parts in that tranny were bad, they were replaced with good used units.

so, I guess you can Expect 1000 more ontop of a shep tranny, if alot of bad stuff is inside. so to be safe, keep 1900 dollers in the bank.

So does SHEP do the modifications that TRE does in their rebuild?

Includes: the modified double synchro 2nd gear, new style hub & sleeves that won't shatter, heavy duty synchros, improved oiling passages, neodymium trash magnet, internal oil filter, magnetic drain plug, all gears & shafts stress relieved and modified for durability and some other tricks that'll make it shift like it should have in the first place. Shift with confidence and enjoy a transmission that doesn't act like a typical DSM.

They also say a general rebuild is $500 -

So which rebuild is better.. the $2400 gives you a NEW tranny that is modified to shift better and last longer.

I'm just confused at the prices being thrown around and what they include...

its 500 Labor, Plus parts, if its getting Rebuilt to stock, might as well use a local Shop. Cause TeamRIP wants to Build Racing trans, and there goin to charge you up the ass for stock parts, plus labor, just to get you to buy a fully built Trans.

I dont know if they would do that, ive never Delt with them, or known anyone to have them Rebuild a Trans to stock form.

I am going to add a little unbiased based information here about the rebuild. I have onyl delt with tre and bm in the past, but they have built no trannys for me, just purchased some parts from them. The reason why most rebuilt tranny shift much better then stock is because more care has gone into making sure all shims are the proper specs, everything checked etc. Alot of the later 1g and earlier 2g cars were shimmed so terrible that eaither the bearings where being crushed or excessive endplay was allowed. Shimming means everything to our transmission, ask those who build them daily. The later style transmission also had double synchro rings on 2nd gear allowing much smoother transitions between gears, aiding in the ohh so popular 8000k+ shifts everyone seems to love so much. As well as earlier synchro material was "thinner" then newer styles that came out later. The later material also works better with synthetic gears oils, where the previous ones were ore designed for atf fluid. In comparision of tre and shep based off there website, and few things i notcied that many may have overlooked. Tre states that they dismantle, check for wears patterns, hot tank and wet magnaflux parts. Shep dismantles, check wear patterns and preasure washing. For those who have built perf engines hot tanking and magnafluxing machinery are not cheap, and are mildy expensive to have done. Although if a gear didn't come apart after 100k+ it might not, but then again some people are having there trannys built for a much large motor. Personaly, i would have either build my tranny w/o hesitation. Tre is cool because they have a cnc lather there that they make many parts with, in my case my custom cynrhos were made to fit my exotic jdm gears. Sorry for the space guys, just food for though.

Hmmmmmmmmm. the CNCing that TRE does, makes me lean twards them. Price leans me to Shep.
