I'm pretty new at modifing cars, so if this question sounds basic....bear with me. I was wondering if the short shift can directly replace the old shifter, or do you have to get anything else before you put it in??

When I'm in gear ie; 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th, it used to be pretty stable when moving the shifter from side to side. Now however, when it's in gear, the shifter has "a lot" of play going from side to side (ex; when it's in 5th, I can move the shifter left and it could move to where 3rd gear and even where 1st gear should be. Same thing in 4th where I can move it to where 2nd or Reverse (it's not actually going into those gears). I took it center cousel apart to check and the only thing I could think of was that "springy thing" that goes in the middle (I looks like a coil wound 6 times and has two prongs that stick out of it). This is really getting on my nerves!!! I had the same problem with a different short shifter so I switched to the B&M, and now after a few months I'm getting the same problem again. Any ideas anybody?

I wouldn't think it is the B&M. I had one on my old GS-T for two years and didn't have an issue. Did you upgrade or check the shifter bushings. Energy Suspension sells a kit for $15. It is suppossed to eleminate the extra play.

ya it supposed to... but it still does... or at least in my case it still does...

Alright well i am looking to buy a shortshifter and i don't want to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars... but i want a shorter shift and what i really want is the stick height to be much lower.. i just got a new ichabahn knob and i have to reach up to grab it .. ..
any ideas on what kind i should get and and where abouts to get it..
THANKS!!

I have a Pacesetter one that was really cheap but it works fine......I just had to add a washer to where it bolts fast to the linkage so that there wasn't any play in the shifter.

I'll chime in with dukmahsik here and vote for the B&M. However, it results in a mainly stock-appearing height (travel is reduced dramatically, but the knob height is only dropped maybe half an inch).

yeah and u can choose a 35% or 50% reduction in throw... i had it on my car for years and NEVER had a problem... really beefy feeling... thumbs up!

Nuespeed if you can find one. I think JC Witney might still have them. I drove cars with B&M, Pacesetter, and Nuespeed and i perferr the Nuespeed.

is it hard to do? self explanatory? my short shifter kit came in and im going to put it on today. im not going to work. so...

but it didn't come with directions, so will i see the same thing in my car and should be able to just replace it?

I just put in my Neuspeed shortshifer last night, it came w/ polyurethane bushings to replace the rubber ones that hold the mount plate down. Replacing those took longer than installing the shifter itself.

Remove the cup holders, there are two screws to take out.
Remove trim that is around the HVAC and the radio, remove the two screws.
Remove the two screws at the rear of the center console, w/ the seats slid all the way forward.
Remove the shift knob, loosen the top of the boot before trying to slide the center console off.
Disconnect the wires to the cig. lighter and ash tray.
Slide console out.
Remove the cotter pin holding the shifter linking to the shifter, remove the 12mm bolt holding the stock shifter on.

Let me know if you need any help.
