Hey guys, I know there was some talk a while back about trying to build a car for PINKS that never materialized. I simply did not have the bandwidth to see that size of a project through. Why not start a discussion about building a car to compete in the Grassroots Motorsports magazine $2007 Challenge (the price changes with the year, next year it will be a $2008 challenge? At least there's a cap to how much will be sent and we can pool our resources together to help the person who will be competing.

I think we can identify a cheap car to build, set a plan for the build and support the person doing the build up and the driving fairly easy. What do you think?

Doing a PINKS build up could have gotten really expensive, this would be really cheap in comparison and a much easier project to make happen. And this would appeal to those who want an all around fast car, not just a fast car in a straight line. A DSM would be perfect for this type of competition because is can be had for cheap and the aftermarket parts are fairly cheap. Not to mention we can do all of the free mods and getto Home Depot mods we want - in fact cheap mods are encouraged.

What do you guys think?

I'm subscribing to this thread because I am interested even though I can probably only help a little bit since I am just like almost everyone else on hear a broke college student

I love the idea. I would send money in.

Times two.

We currently have over 75,000 members, and I would guess somewhere around 10,000 active members (just speculation though). All we have to give is something like a dollar (or two, if you are feeling generous ), and it will be more than enough to cover the costs of building a budget-minded vehicle such as this.

Good idea. :)

Better idea... Everyone on the site should send ME a dollar!!!!ROFL ROFL

But I honestly think we could raise 2007 dollars really easily. Let's not let this idea die!

I raised 300 at my school by just walked around and asking people for spare change... My friends and I were real bored...

I'm down, but we still have to figure out the same stuff we would've for the PINKS challenge. Who will build, tune, drive, all of that. But if the Mods figure that out, or maybe even a poll for that, I'm down. I'll give my 2 bux. :thumb:

Unless people want to travel, it would be "ideal" for the folks down in the FL/GA areas to build this vehicle. According to the Grassroots Motorsports site, they were/are looking to host the event at Gainesville Raceway.

Haven't been around for a week or so, but I saw this and had to check it out. A few buddys and I are building a FierSHO for this. 88 Pontiac Fiero with a Taurus SHO motor shoved in it. The idea for the competition is awesome, but I have a feeling most people stretch the rules a bit. In any case, I'd love to see a DSM in the runnings. :thumb:
(I almost volunteered my car for it, but thought better of messing with a 97k orig. mile motor)

My club up here in CT was gonna do an entry. Unfortunatly, we couldn't get the money raised.

So I'd still like to do this. Entries will not be accepted after September 1st. So we need to put a solid plan in place and familiarize ourselves with the rules very quickly so we can determine if we can have a car built by then.

Here are the official rules:
http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/challenge/2007rules.html

Let's start discussing some possible strategies. Please pay attention to what is allowed before you start throwing out ideas for build-ups and cars to build. The competition will be held in Gainesville, Florida on October 4-6, 2007 so that will have to be taken into consideration as well. I don't think I'll be able to attend as it stands now. But I might still be able to coordinate the effort - I'll need some help though.

I'm down for a few bucks if we can get a plan together.

I propose a shell of an AWD purchased for 300ish, even from the forums.

Someone interested in the project must have a motor for it.

Nitrous is probably a good way to go for cheap power, 16g turbo,

I can get us a front mount damaged but functional intercooler off a saab for free or very cheap.

Who wants to do the building?

Chris, you need to start a "donation" thread (through PayPal or wherever) so the money can begin being collected. Throw it up on the main page of Tuners and hopefully we'll see a positive and enthusiastic response. :)

We first need to agree on the model of the DSM we'll be using. According to Rule #18, no one can just donate parts to the cause without eating away at the 2007 dollar spending limit, so people giving away free parts is not viable (well, it is, but we would have to factor in a "fair" price for the part).

Perhaps if Chris just designates a DSM model it would be easier, instead of wasting time disputing this way or that way.
