I was going to get my girl and I stopped at this red light, then my car just shut off, so I pushed it to the side street and all of the electronics came on, but when I poped my hood and pulled 1 of the coil wires off they dont spark when I try to crank it over any ideas???:sosad: :(

The engine will crank (turn over) without the timing belt or ECU working.
What's important is that the timing belt rotates while cranking and that the CEL turns on and the boost gauge goes to 0 when you turn on the ignition. After 5 seconds the CEL will go out but the boost gauge will stay at 0 if the ECU booted and stayed running.

If both are working then you can start looks at things like the CAS, PTM, and coils.

Well the other day when I tryed starting it, the timing belt was moving and yes the Boost gauge does go to 0 when prestarting an the CEL comes on an goes out like normal.

Reason I'd asked about the belt is that on the 1Gs the ECU uses the CAS to determine when to fire the injectors/spark. The CAS is positioned on the intake camshaft, so if the belt broke, the CAS is not moving/working.

The starter will still be able to rotate the bottom end of the engine though :dsm:

yea I see what your saying. But I dont have a timing cover on so you can see everything. Its all there it rotates when I try to start it but theres still no spark =(

Update! Ok, NOW I understand what you mean LOL, and yes the timing belt doesnt rotate when I try to start it, so im guessing this is a serious problem?? Like the timing belt is on the cam gears, but it just wont spin when I try and start it. So what does this mean?

It means the belt stripped off it's teeth, the crank was still turning but the cams weren't and the pistons hit the valves most likely bending them.

Now you get to rebuild the head and replace the timing belt to get the car running again.

Steve

will all of the grooves be on the timing belt? cause the timing belt looks fine?? this sucks i hope thats not it

And wait there was no noise or anything prior to the shutdown, I was at a red light an the car was idling perfectly at 800 an the car just suddenly shut off an it wouldnt restart. Not to mention the head was rebuilt by Turbo Trix in november =(

So lets get this straight, you turn the key to start, and the starter makes its little noise as normal. But the timing belt doesnt move, correct?

Also, have you actually looked at the whole timing belt?

That's exactly how mine went.

Did they do the belt job too? Was the timing tensioner, idler pulley. tensioner pulley and balance shaft belt replaced at the same time? :dsm:

That sucks, but it certainly sounds like your car jumped timing... very badly too if it stripped enough teeth to actually keep the belt from moving.

When my car jumped timing, I had just pulled out of my drive way and starting to head down the street... the car made no noise... just turned off. But based on no spark, cam gears not turning, and no start... Im safe to say the valves are toast. You might have gotten lucky and only bent intake or exhaust side. I bent all my exhaust valves, but replaced both sets anyways.

When I had the head replaced, I also paid to have new tensioners (all), pullys, belts, idlers, etc replaced. Everything on the Timing belt and accessories system has been changed. About the only way to guarentee another 70K or so before it does it again.

Ive decided based on what I have read here that even those who change the belt religiously every 30k, they are still going to have timing belt issues somewhere down the line.. .including me.

(sorry about any typos or errors, its late and Im tired)

^ Yea they replaced the whole head, because the kid I bought it from jumped 7 teeth and I had the Head remachined an got all new valves, guides, and lifters and they also replaced everything on the timing belt! Its just weird to think that it jumped timing at idle, idk its going back to TTR on monday so when they get to it i'll find out and let you guys know. Thanks for the info.

mine did the same thing about 4 months ago, except mine was a 6 bolt swap from forced performance. timing belt had about 6k miles on it and stripped about 6 inches worth of teeth. Guess i get to swap on that 7bolt head he gave me.
