I'm helping out a good buddy of mine by turboing his 98 n/t Eclipse for him. Its a great running car that has 68,000 on the stock 420a. He is just looking for a little more power. And honestly, it'd be nice to have another turbo 2g buddy.

I just thought I would share the progress and build up. I'm starting on it today with the pump and fmu.

Acquired parts:

T3 Ford Thunderbird turbo (Free)
OBX 12:1 FMU ($75)
255 lph Walbro FP ($75)
HKS Bov ($180)
Evo 8 Intercooler ($120)
HKS Flange ($20)
Manifold ($150)
AC autotechnics Boost Gauge ($35)
Missing Link ($50)

You guys do plan on building up the internals right? I wouldn't want to see you spend all this time on it for it to only last a few months. Nice project though!

its a 5 speed

eventually we do plan on building it up, but before then were just gonna keep the boost down.

Love the turbo love the car hate to see her blow but it would be fun! I second 5psi .

Definately 5psi, it has to be, the motors stock, Id personally go lower, Im always cautious when it comes to overboosting, anyway, it looks like its gonna be a project, need some help you got my #.

No offense to the 4g guys in here, but by no means is 5psi the limit. Sure it's more safe than higher levels(duh) but 8 is basically the standard that people shoot to run when they go turbo. Some people run 10 and are fine. It's all about the condition of the motor, judging by the milage, you seem like you should be in great condition, but don't judge the amount of boost to run solely on milage, run a compression test and see what numbers you get.

I've been running 6psi daily for about 2 months, before that I ran 8 daily for about 4 months and have had no problems with the motor once so ever.

5psi is definitely not the limit on the stock motor, especially if he is running a front mount intercooler. I have been running 8psi daily with a 2g SMIC for 12k miles now, with no problems. I attempted to run 10psi at the track but ran into some fuel issues, so he should keep it at or below 8psi. By the looks of it I have the same fuel system as him, walbro 255 HP and a vortech 12:1 fmu with stock injectors on a stock block.

also looks like he had the missing door handle blues.

also looks like he has the missing door handle blues.

I don't mean to hijact someone's topic, but I didn't wanna start up on another one with basically the same question so I'll ask here.

Which one do you think will better react to boost: 4g64 or 420a?

I'm not really familiar with the 4g64 and its capabilities, so I can't really answer that question. Sorry I can't help there.

Just to update everone....

we are almost done with Jose's turbo kit on his 420a. We started it up and theres a small leak from a tee on the coolant line and both sides are leakin on the oil feed line. They're not bad, but they do need to be taken care of.

ill have pics up soon.

the promised pics!

I'm sorry, but the camera's really old and I couldn't move the car.

I could not believe how easy it was to mount the evo 8 intercooler. I broke the top tab off and that was it! The 2 side tabs were perfect to bolt right onto the radiator support.

I must say, that is an interesting route you took with the IC piping... Are you able to close the hood?

EDIT: Where did you get that manifold from for $150? I'll be shopping for a new one soon.

haha! Yeah, it was the only way we could get it to work. No, the hood wont close. We were thinking of a hood scoop, unless someone else has a better idea.

The manifold was bought from a fellow dsm'er...sorry.

I say in total the cost was about $800...more or less. There were many things that could of been done differently. We had trouble when we tried cheapin out on a lot of things and Jose just had to have the new HKS bov:rolleyes: I'm sure it could be done cheaper if you were to pick and choose your parts through ebay or the junkyard:thumb:

It took us one about a week and a half, but thats because things went wrong and we had to find/order parts. If I had to do again, I would bet i could do in 2 days.
