water temp gauge where did you tap into??

Im not sure about the 2g but my 1g had an unsed hole in the back of the thermostat housing that just had a plug in it. I removed the plug and my temp sending unit screwed right in.

i took out the probe for the in dash gauge and put in the probe for the autometer gauge. the threads are the same, so its just a matter of pulling out the old one and putting in the new one and running the wire.

The factory sending unit wont work with the autometer gauge properly, but will the autometer gauge work with the factory gauge as well? Just run both wires to the new sending unit? I'm about to install mine as well and I'm not looking forward to drilling.

i just didnt hook up my factory dash gauge anymore and i left the wire for it zip tied to the side of the battery holder.

also, i think my cooling system is screwed... could you tell me how often yours hits 210 once you get yours all set up? mine hovers on or a little below 210 for highway driving. i think i might need to start a new thread about this though...

no i would like to know too becasue mine is the same and i have a fluidyne radiator and fal fans so.......

well, if we have similar numbers then i think it's safe to say we're ok. im going to flush my coolant system today with the hose and see if it makes it any better... i just dont remember it getting that hot before I put in the new thermostat and i guess it could also be because of the hot ass weather we're getting, but i dont know.

Completed it last night with some assistance from Ramen, as soon as the car warms up its 210F steady. I have a big GReddy FMIC and a front kit so air to the rad is restricted. I rolled the windows down and put the heater on full blast and I got it down about 10F. Put the A/C on but it was a cooler day and I was starting to get chilly so I'll have to wait til the next hot day. My car starts to overheat with A/C so now I can finally see what temp it hits before I turn it off. Oh yeah, fresh coolant - 50/50. Thermostat changed in the spring.

So I should just drill a 1/8" hole into the T-stat housing? If so, where did you guys tap for a power source?? ( gauge lights...)

I can't remember which size I drilled off hand, but yes just drill into the thermostat housing. You can use the power source where ever you get a 12volt reading pretty much. My car already had a boost gauge so I just split off the power from there, not 100% sure where it traces back to but it works with the interior lights so the gauge lighting turns on when I turn my lights on.

I put mine here. Used the same tap I used for the EGT probe, 1/8" NPT.

wow i have the greddy unit and my probe looks very different then yours..

210F is normal for a 2g. I still have the stock radiator with one slim fan and a huge fmic. Temps on the highway never exceed 185F. Stop and go traffic i see around 190-200F sometimes as high as 215F. Time for a koyo LOL...:)

If you could please find out for me what wires your gauge lights are tapped into, I would really appreciate it. I want to do the same thing with mine but my car doesn't have a battery installed yet so I can't test wires.

My car is in storage, and I don't plan to rip out the gauge pillar anytime soon, so if anyone else can shed some light for him go for it.

Just pop off the top of the thermostat housing. It's like $1 for a new gasket or less. that way you don't risk anything.

If any of you are using 6 Bolt Thermostat housings in a 2G i have like 3 or 4 plugs to put a probe someplace. and if the holes are too big, you can use a threaded reducer.. brass or something..

Just a thought.

On my 2G I tapped in to the cigarette lighter. You can probably do the same on your 1G. Light bulbs don't have polarity (doesn't matter which side is grounded...) so it shouldn't matter which wire goes to which cl wire. If you're running leds and the don't turn on, turn them 180 degrees in the socket and they should work.

Thanks for the response but I really want them to turn on with my parking lights, not accesory (which the cigarette lighter is controlled by). But now we're just getting way off topic....

You're right. I tapped off of the light ring around the lighter...
Sorry for the misinformation.

im having an issue with my gauge. it starts out ok when the car is just started but after a few minutes it pings at 250 and just sits there. stock gauge says everything is ok. could it be the signal wire? (24 gauge :notgood: ) i think i read that the wire had to be around a 10 gauge
