A 16 year old boy was killed when his 92 talon tsi fell on him, working on the tranny.his dad came home and found him,he said the worst thing is having to jack the car up so he could pull his dead son from underneath the car.BE VERY CAREFUL GUYS.

This is why you use jackstands, good ones. Not just a jack, not a few pieces of wood. Jackstands, hell leave the jack under it too, and wheel chocks.

One of my best friends dad was killed that way. NEVER work under your car without jack stands! :nono:

you gotta use jack stands, and use them right. I even leave as many tires on my car as I can while I'm working under it.

Damn shame. :toobad:

All it takes is for the car to slip off that jack right in front of you one time and you realize that jack stands have always been a good idea.

Not to be a dick, here, but 1) Why was a 16 year allowed to be working on a turbo DSM by himself? And 2) Why wasn't he using stands? If you ask me, it's definitely sad, but it speaks to issues in our culture. I know that I won't be letting my 16 year old son have a fast car until he's proven himself capable of handling it (I think that would mean a year of autoX or similar experience), and furthermore, there's no way in hell a child should be doing anything under a car without an experienced adult or, at the very least, a buddy who's not an idiot.

Just me and my whitebread, old-fashioned ways. :shrug

Iv seen someone jack a car up only to lift the body alittle so they could get their arms under the front bumper to work on something. They said it was fine that way because the car wouldnt drop low enough to crush their arms, if it did fall. Well the car fell and pushed his arm down shattering his shoulder.

I always use stands, if you don't, well, you see what happens....

This happened to my brother about 10 years ago. He was working on his pos thunderbird and it fell on his head. He lived through it though, but he has had alot of medical problems and surgeries since then. He was using a factory jack that was in the car and was working on his tranny when it slipped and the car came down on him. My grandmother was in the house when she heard it and ran outside. Then she lifted the car just enough for my brother to get out. If she hadnt been there he probobly wouldnt have made it. Also me and my freind was at the races one night and his tranny messed up on his car(67 Chevy II Nova = a heavy sob) so instead of using jackstands to secure the thing he pulls it halfway on the trailor just enough to get under it and fix the problem. While he was under there he accidentally knocked it out of gear and the car rolled back on top of him. It crushed his collar bone cracked some ribs and put a big gash in the back of his head. I was halfway under the car when it happened but i got out of the way and tried to stop it, didnt work. My point being is that if they both where using jackstands that would have never happened and would have saved them and their families alot of pain and suffering. So no matter what is beeing done under the car ALWAYS USE JACKSTANDS, besides, it will make the job easier.

Man, that's terrible. Sometimes you learn the hard way. My 2g fell off the jack and nearly crushed my hand five years ago. Luckly the jack got wedged underneath the car so it didn't hit the floor. I cut my hand up pretty bad, but that was it. If I had my head underneath at the time it would have been over. I always use jackstands now.

I had my first car when I was 12, from then till 16 I had built/tore apart at least 5 cars. And it has to do with age/experience when mistakes happen, hell even older people make some "idiot" ones.
But I had my share at that age. I had an f-body fall from a bottle jack tires still on and give me a concusion, cut air lines for air shocks and took most of my hair off, had a tranny fall off the jack and pin me for 3 hours till someone came home. It was dumb ass things I did, I knew about cars but not saftey, and when I was young safety was never an issue because I didn't know better.
Believe it or not its our job as "the older" crew when we give advice about swapping a part or other tech related shit to make them with safety in mind when we make suggestions. Just my opinion and its not always followed, alot of you may know what I mean, take changing springs, alot of people know how to do it without a compressor and make suggestions to do it that way. But you get a 16/17 year doing it and he takes his head off trying it that way because he may not know any better.
I always do things now with safety in mind even if it takes me twice the time to do the same job, I'm 31 and have gotten very lucky when I was younger and have tons of battle scares of stupidity to prove it.. I love life and keeping all my digits LOL and my eyes, eyes are important I have scares on both o them from being stupid hell even being safe bad things can happen you just need to brings the odds of an accident down.
And driggs I don't think it has anything to do with how fast it will be, my first car that was finished and put on the road at 16 was a 400 whp 72 camaro with all the goodies, I was mature enough to build it and know what I was doing and I knew its power and how to maintain it, I was lucky growing up to have a lot car on 90 acres driving it at 13 and at 15 I was in my first dirt track race with a permit, LOL was only allowed to be in "heat" races and was govern'd at 40 mph but still and experience builder.
I think the problem "society" is right on target though and not speaking about anyone here but in general the respect for speed and alot of other things is just not present with alot of the younger crowd.

definately time for me to invest in a pair of jack stands, that's really sad :(

Yeah, it's just not worth it to not have them man. I use both jackstands and jack. I leave the jack up after I jack the car up just to give extra support.

I totally disagree, a 16 year old although can be stupid, some can be just as car smart as some 20 or 30 year olds. I agree with you on the stands. But with the 16 year old proving himself is not a reason to stop them from letting them get a car the kid wants, yea sure if they are a terrible driver then I would see were your coming from but you can notice if the kids a good or bad driver usually within 15 minutes of driving him. I agree he was dumb by not using the jackstands, but saying an adult has to be there is just like saying when your 21 you have to drink with an expeirenced (sp?) adult just because you are (supposed to be) new at drinking.

Just me and my new fashioned ways, which is OK I guess.

That comparison sucked, it was the best thing I could think of.

I agree, but I've been damn poor and can't stay away from the DSM. I'm gonna pick up a set tonight hopefully

You can go to Wal-Mart and get a pair of jackstands for less than a tank of gas. No excuse not to use them (or buy them).

Yep.. i agree. I got mine from Sears, but they were less than a tank of gas.

Hell, if my car is going to be up for any extended period of time, I use jackstands and put wheels under each tire. Also, its good to have a cell phone on you but its smart to always have someone around. Sad to hear about the kid though. Hopefully it can be a lesson to everyone.
