Hey guys I was just wondering about the basics of the lsd insert. What benefits would it have for my awd?? Does it replace my current Lsd, is it stronger?? If I have a mid 12sec car (semi-daily driver) is it something worth while to get??

Reason I ask is I will be putting in my act 2600 soon and the tranny will be out so i'll have room to work.

Anything I can do to the tranny while it's out?? Easy ad ons?? It's a manual.

Thanks for the space :thumb:

well all DSM come with open front diffs. Techically AWD are only 3 wheel drive, this should make a hugh improvment in the track because its gives more power to the wheels that grips. If you gonna replace the clutch i would lookin into this too :dsm:

i have a fwd with a kaaza and it was like 900 bucks but u can find them used fo9r lik 700 like the one on here classifieds dont get an LSD block type if it breaks ur shit is really messed up then save and get the reall deal..
or oct im downing my TSI to have shepherd racing rebuild mine ;) :talon:

How many people on DSMtuners have had any of the block types break though??

You're probably more likely to get crankwalk then have a "block type" LSD break apart and loose demolish your tranny.

im sure u have already heard the saying DO IT CHEAP DO IT TWICE!! do it once the RIGHT way and never worry about it AGAIN.... :talon:

take it from me and almost everyone else who put the bm tranny or other inserts

THEY F`IN EXPLODE

it shot pieces of metal through my housing and messed up my act flywheel and my gears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

correction the lsd insert didnt explode, the lsd made my diff. explode and it was installed by bmtranny themselves so they cant say it was installed correctly,it was fine till i installed a big 16g turbo then BAMMMMMMM,cant handle power i guess,so now im buying a new tranny ,flywheel , and quaife, if you still want to go cheap do a search on this forum and google and see how many other people had the same problem

bmtranny... theyres ur problem right theyre =P Seems alot of people have had problems with bmtranny's transmissions and theyre insert from what ive seen over time.

AWDs are actually putting power to two wheels. The rear end is open also. I'd deffinetly recommend putting one in if you can't afford/don't want to buy a real one.

Not all of them. An LSD rear was an option. My car has it. It even says "LSD" on the pumpkin.

We've never had one explode, but I can say it's held up very well in my fwd car. This is the 513whp car and has made several passes at that power level on slicks without a problem. Trust me, we TRIED to break this thing. LOL

Thanks for all the input guys, I'm not planning on making a 500hp monster out of my dsm. At those power levels I won't be able to afford the maintenance
I ran a search on the bm insterts and found a lot of people had problem with them, however I haven't heard of anyone that has had problems with the sbr lsd. If it holds for 2w 500hp man i'm sure it will be fine for my moddest 350hp driver. That, and the only track runs I will be making will be few and far between. Thanks again guys.

Has anyone had a problem with the sbr lsd??? Or has one and could comment on it? Not a review.....just a yes or no. Don't want the thread to close :thumb:

So if my cad has an lsd I don't need the insert?? Probably a simple question, but i know barely anything about drive train components

For those of you that were wondering here is what sbr emailed me, extremely helpful!! :thumb:

Our LSD is for the front tranny so that when the wheels are straight it's
turning both front wheels with all available power. Mitsu stock front
diff's only turn one wheel or the other with over 75% of the available
power which makes handling on slippery roads great etc., but if your
looking to drag race, auto X etc, it's lame.

If your rearend has a factory LSD, your car upon sensing slip kicks the
other wheel in to help.

I've been using the BM Tranny insert from SBR for about a year now. It has held up great at the drag stip, autocrosses and even at summit point raceway. This is with a 2g gst w/ big 16g at 20psi. No problems yet, works okay and very cheap. If you are doing a clutch install its only an extra hour worth of work. Just get some sealant and 2 new nuts to hold the gears on rather than reusing them.

Okay, so now I'm confused. One post complained about the BM insert, another says they have no problems with SBR's, then this one says the BM Tranny insert FROM SBR. Is it the same product that they are reselling, or has it been modified some - or it something different all together.

I used to want an insert, then I wanted a Quaife - but I think they both put a lot of stress on the spider gears. Perhaps I will go with a KAAZ instead.

How many different ways do you think you can make an LSD insert? Almost all of them on the market (SBR, BM, Phantom, SFS) are nearly identical in form and function. The only thing different would be the spring and even those are all comparable.

Sounds to me like the insert is only a good idea if you are dragging or doing auto-x, I love my traction in the rain and have decided that I don't want to lessen it :)
Speaking of which, it's pouring right now.......dumb pacific northwest and our dumb rain

SBR WAS selling BM lsd's for a while. Now all of a sudden theyre 'SBR lsd's'. So either theyre calling them SBR yadda yadda like most of theyre products (fmic's etc are really kinetics, gseries turbo's are PTEs) or they took BM's design and had theyre own made. Either way SBR/BM lsd is the same.

Hell I don't know. How many different ways can you make a 2.5" or 3" exhaust? Just take some pipe, bend it and stick a straight through muffler on the end. But for most popular tuner cars there's anywhere between 10 and 50 different brands. They say they haven't broken one on a car that's a hell of a lot stronger then mine will ever be and I've heard of people breaking them with less power so I was just curious if they'd stumbled onto something new.

anconover,
Why are you hating on SBR? I've personally spent over $3,000 with them and I don't have any complaints.
