Viscous LSD and Gearing questions


I have a 95 GSX MT with the Factory Viscous type LSD in the Rear Diff.
Lately I have been hearing a rattling noise from the unit. So yesterday I change the fluid
And wow.. a bunch of blue looking grease like substance came out. And then the fluid.

So I put in some BG Sync II and the Mitsu LSD friction modifier into the unit. The car still makes the sound but it seems to go away now… So my question is what was the blue looking grease stuff and should I replace this unit since something is rattling around inside and if I keep driving it.. will it lock up and throw the car out of control?

The car is a 95 so I think I was the first person to change the fluid. The car has 108k on it
And I have changed all the other drive line fluids @ 104k. The noise stated at 107k.


GEARING QUESTION:
My friend has a 98 GSX MT without an LSD Rear diff… Our gearing seems to be really different.. at 65 his car is turning 2600 rpm while my 95 GSX at 65mph turns at 3000 rpm… 5th gear

@ 75mph his car is just a 3100 rpm (I need to check the log) while mine is at 3400 rpm or so… I find that odd… what do you guys think?

The car also acts as if it wants to step out to one side or the other... not sure whats going on here... so the car has been parked and taken off-line so to speak...
It is becoming clear that something is wrong... just not sure what...

anyone have or had an issue like this?

You mentioned in my other thread you rebuilt the trans? What did you put back in? Same trans, just rebuilt? Different year rebuilt trans? GVR4 trans? If it's one of the latter I mentioned you could have gearing issues.

Otherwise, it sounds like a bad center diff. Search for some threads on center diff.

The grease was likley just assembly lube in the diff that never disolved. If it's leaking fluid, you've likely overfilled it or you axle seals are shot.

As for the Trans rebuild... that's what I don't know... When I got the car from the dealer about 2 years ago they "said" that the trans had a year warranty on it.. I assumed that it was a rebuild... IT could be a Junkyard POS that bolted up.. I am sure no regard was given for the fact that parts may not be interchanged.. So I have no clue... I have had the car for 2 years and I have out about 4000 miles on it... and one Autocross.. The sound just started sometime a few months ago while just driving around... I found out that my front axles were broken(Real bad shape... the boot came in contact with the ball joint) so I replaced them thinking that was the source of the rattle sound... it was not.

Researching as you suggested I think the rattle sound I hear is something broken... Inside the rear diff /Center Diff//

Let me ask this if I may... Is the Center Diff also known as the Rear Diff on the DSM's?
Or do we have a Front Center and Rear... This stuff exceeds my knowledge base so I may have to take it to a shop or even the dealer...

Would a transmission shop be able to replace the diffs if they are bad? Also can I look for a serial number sequence to see if I have the right trans on the car?

You have an open front, viscous center, and possibly a viscous rear (check behind the driver's side door on the body for a bright orange sticker). As for your problem, look for some specialized shops nearby dealing with drivetrain parts would be your best bet, since you don't have too much experience.
