Ok. I know theres plenty of thread's on here regarding this topic, but I can't seem to find one that answer's exactly what i'm looking for. Here is my situation.
I'm picking up a 96 GST shell with no motor, 300 bucks, awsome condition, cant pass it up. I have a complete 6bolt motor all sensors, everything, no tranny. I want to know what parts im going to need. Do i need a 2g tranny, or a 1g tranny, do i need to swap any of the sensors for the 2g ecu ? i know i have to rewire the CAS, what about mounting ? i know i have to trim one of the motor mounts, but any help/advice would be awsome. thank you

im in the middle of mine. I'm guessing you will need a 2g fwd tranny, a 6 bolt flywheel, 6 bolt timing belt parts, 2g knock sensor, 1g water pump, 2g(maybe 1g would work?) powersteering, for the mounts you use the 2g mounts and you modify one. I know you want to plan everything out ahead of time but there are alot of things you dont realize until you start tearing into it. Good luck.

You need a 2G power steering pump. I know cuz I have to replace mine. Stupid pump keeps clattering against the mount.

Can you still use the 2G Timing Belt if you are keeping the 2G Head and installing it on a 6 Bolt? It would make since to swap the T-Belt if you were changing to a 1G Head, but I cant seem to find anywhere where it says that you have to go to a 1G T-Belt if you are keeping the 2G Head.

thanks

Yes you can, but if your timing belt has more than 40000 miles on it then i would go ahead and change it while you are in there. Makes for less hassle in the long run. I dont think there is a difference between the two timing belts.

I just did a 6bolt swap using a 2G head. Since I am using a 6bolt front case, I used a 1g timing belt. I'm not sure if there is a difference between a 1g and 2g timing belt. I did use OEM belt.

I know that the orientation of the tensioner pulley is different between a 1g and 2g. That is the reason, I think, why I used a 1g timing belt.

Parts List
Compiled by Sean Caron with the help of the DSM1Gina2G list.

1G CAS (91-92 Optical Effect, 93-94 Hall Effect)
1G Oil Cooler (90-92 MD 157670 6bolt water cooled oil cooler)
1G Water Pump
1G Oil Pump/Front Case
1G Timing Belt necessities
2G Engine mount (modified) use 2G engine mount trimmed, with 1G tensioner arm
1G Timing Belt Covers (modified)
1G 90-92 6-bolt block (with whatever internals)
1G 6-bolt Flywheel
2G Starter Mounting bracket
1G Water Pipe
1G lower radiator hose
1G Thermostat housing/ Water Neck
1G 6-bolt oil pan Balance shafts (remove them or keep em, its up to you, we take them out)
2G Alternator
2G Power Steering Pump
2G A/C 2G Belts
On a 95-96 car with stock 2G head

Swap Plugs 1 and 4 with 2 and 3 (order is not important)

On a 97+ car with stock 2G head

No plug swap or injector swap is necessary

For a complete 1G 6-bolt head/block

Swap 2G ISC with 1G Throttle body 1G Coil pack and bracket
1G Head with internals
1G Intake manifold with stock 2G knock sensor
Reuse 2G sensor including oil, water temp, etc.
2G fuel rail to accommodate 2G Fuel Pressure Regulator
2G MAP sensor either in Intake Mani or T-d off of Brake booster Vac line
Relocate power transistor mount
Special thanks to the whole DSM1Gina2G list members who have helped in providing the useful information needed to compile this detailed list, Sean Caron for providing the car and motivating me. Justin and Robert from the RRE crew who fought hard when they were cutting oil pump covers, no more; just bolt it in with hand tools.

What does a starter mounting bracket look like? And how does it help the starter mount?
A 90 cas wont work? cause thats what I have for the donor motor.
What is the map sensor for?
IS there any way to use a 1g tranny in a 2g?

The starter mounting bracket is that thin plate between the engine and trans.

The 90 Cas will work

THe Map sensor is a manifodl differential sensor and doesn't need to be hooked up, but you can just plug vac into it if you want.

You can not use a 1g trans on a 2g. It's totally different and a crazy amount of work to make it fit. Honestly putting a trans out of a Honda woudl be just as easy.

Now, I still dont understand the map sensor thing. I know nothing about 2g's but I have taken my 1g completely apart and put it back together so you can say I know a lil bit about it. I am putting my 1g block and head in a 98 gst. What would I need a map sensor plugged into my intake manifold for? I plan on putting one in anyway for a safc to tune boost vs rpm but I was just curious about wheather its something that you have to do when putting a 1g head on? Plus, know if my 1g starter will work?

Also, is there any way to do away with emissions for 2g's and still be able to clear the check engine lights for all those codes?

Make sure you go with the proper 6bolt flywheel per your application. FWD tranny -->FWD 6 bolt flywheel. Same deal with the AWD trannies.

This should be common sense to those doing it, but since I didn't see it listed I figured I'd mention it.

The map sensor on a 2g is only there to allow the ECU to verify that the EGR system comes on when it should. I heard that running a long vac line (3-4 feet? maybe more) to htat sensor will cause enough pressure drop to make the ECU think its working and not trigger the EGR light. You will still likely end up with the RM mifire issue, so be prepared to do the baro wire mod. Be sure you know what that entails and what the risks of it are. You need a logger and a AFC or similar at the least if you do a baro wire mod. And it should go without saying that the best way to pull off the 6 bolt swap is with DSMlink. Absolutely zero hassle... Worth the cost for that alone for the 1gina2g guys, IMO.

anyone in the philly/NJ/MD area want to help me drop a 6 bolt into my 2g?my 95 tsi just walked on me...

does anyone have any instructions on how to do the cas re-wire? So if i got a dsm link, I could clear all those check engine codes that a 6bolt swap would cause?

Roadrace sells a wire harness.. check out their website. :thumb:

You would never get those codes a 6 bolt swap causes. ;) You disable the DTCs inside the ECU via DSMlink.

So i need to use my 2g fuel rail and regulator???

I just bought a complete 6-bolt, can't i use the 1g fuel components?

2g ECU expects 43 psi base pressure, and the 1g reg will give you ~38. You cant bolt the 2g reg on the 1g rail (or vice versa). Thankfully the rails are interchangeable, so you can just run the 2g rail/reg. If you go with an aftermarket regulator you can use either rail, though "bolt on" aftermarket regulators are rail-specific for the same reasons the stock regs are: different flanges. Hope that helps.

Well, over the weekend i did the 6bolt swap. First off, I cracked my tranny mount getting out the old rubber junk. I had that welded and put the inserts in. I had to take my clutch and flywheel off to swap starter mounting brackets. the 1g starter will work as I suspected. I had to take my timing belt stuff off to swap timing belt side motor mounts. I had to take my old motor mounts off and put the 7 bolt mounts on the tranny. I ran into some problems with the swap because im ghetto but other than that it went ok. I am still having a problem threading the timing belt side motor mount bolt into the frame but I will be ok. I still need to re-wire the cas and all that stuff. Its gonna be a fun prject.
