Well here is the story. I went to a friends house to do a leak test since my car was only boosting 8psi. And I think it was boosting like that from the previous owner. I have had it for 3K miles so far. So we test it up to 15psi and found 1 leak by the TB nothing major. So we check to make sure the wastegate is opening and it is. Then we say maybe a bad exhaust leak that I haven't noticed. So we take a piece off wood and put it against the muffler to see if the exhaust routes back into a leak somewhere. We did that for 3-5 secs at a time about 4x didn't wanna hurt anything, Well no leaks. So I tightened down the intake and go home. I'm figuring bad wastegate, I pull onto the road and floor it and now noticed my turbo sounds like a SC I mean a nice loud noticeable wine. It sounded like a 03-04 Cobra wine. I immediately pull over check and check under the hood and nothing seems out of place. The car still pulls just like before but now with a SC wine. I get home take off the intake check the turbo for shaft play and the fins and all seem fine. I then noticed the BCS was hooked up wrong. I fixed that go for a spin bam 15psi. Felt allot better at 15 then 8psi but that Sc wine is still around. I got people giving me thumbs up cause they think I have a blower on it OMG . So I took it out for awhile and she pulled fine but that noise!!! So I brought her home and pondering what did we do at my buds house to cause this. Also the black rubber piece that goes onto the turbo where you put the intake back on wasn't on there. I figured I must of dropped it at my friends house. You figured if I sucked that in the fins would be shot right but I dought that happened. Any help? I'm  I minute it was fine then after we did what we did mentioned above it started wining.

Take your intake pipe off again and double check for shaft play and the condition of the compressor wheel, most likely your turbo is contacting the compressor housing causing it to whine.

This is the same way I managed to kill my 14B a couple years back. At an auto-x event the car developed a distinct whine similar to a supercharger. When I got home I removed the intake snorkel to find the rubber spacer at the compressor inlet missing and the compressor wheel chewed up. There was so much shaft play that the wheel was rubbing against the housing.

Start looking for a new turbo. At least 16g's are cheap now a days.

sometimes a turbo can have fine shaft play and still be dying.

my buddies 14b showed no shaft play, sounded like a SC, then died a week later.

it sounds like a SC cause the turbo is trying so dam hard to do its job, even though its on its last leg.

Even though it was fine 1 minute then right after it started whailing? I checked again and it looked good here are some pics...

Edit: Now that I look at it do some of the fins looked cracked? I really hope that rubber piece didn't get sucked in but it would of been more chewed up then that then what appears to be a crack in the fins.

Where can I get another wheel at? I wish I could get a 16G I don't have any supporting mods or that much $$$.

Whoa that looks kinda cool, but it is definitely done. You can pick up 14B's for a song if you look around. Check the classifieds and the trader, but as always it is up to you to make sure you don't get scammed.

Yeah, turbo whine usually indicates a failing turbo. And yes, those fins look horrible. That turbo definitely needs to be replaced asap.

You are OK to use a 16G, as long as you keep the boost down until you have supporting mods. If you lack the funds for a 16g, then start shopping the classifieds, the local junkyards, and eBay for a replacement 14b. You should be able to find a good one for $100-$150.

Any idea how that happened? Would it be cheaper to get that wheel or just a new 14b all together? Thanks for the input guys.

Excesive shaft play allowed the compressor wheel the contact the housing resulting in a bunch of bent fins.

Buy a used 14b or 16g, deffinitly don't waste your money rebuilding that one as it has to be balanced etc. and will probably cost you more then just buying a used turbo.

Even if you located a new wheel for a good price, you'd still have to buy a rebuild kit and then pay someone to rebuild it (unless you want to tackle the job yourself - it's not too difficult) and after rebuilding it, you would have to find someone to balance it for you. IMO, it would be much cheaper locating a different 14b as apposed to rebuilding yours.

Well I will start looking. I just want to thank everyone once again for the help you guys always give me good advice. I will start looking for another 14b or even a small 16G. thanks again

dont drive around like that. God forbid a fin breaks off and goes into the motor.

it can't get into the motor

on topic, everyone has the right conclusion.. but i've never seen ALL of the fins bent like that. definitely cool looking though :sneaky:

replace the 14B.. and if you can find a seperated 7 cm . look into FP's 18G replacement :thumb:

Thats exactly what my crompressor wheel looked like after injesting that stupid rubber spacer.

I would suggest just buying a new turbo if you can scrap up the money, your gonna want something with a 7cm turbine housing instead of the 18g replacement.

yeah FP has that 18G replacement for $429 not a bad idea now I just need the $429. LOL!..Hey Lessismore I figured if I sucked that rubber piece in that more damage would of happened no?. Did you find out where all the black rubber pieces are? Do u think they are in my sidemount? Thanks

Hey I edited it after I took the pic so ha!!! LOL! I'm gonna take the IC piping off and see what it ate..

Go ahead and remove the ic and dump all the rubber out of it. Might as well do a good cleaning while you are at it. Make sure to blow it out very well with compressed air, if not, you will never get all the rubber pieces out.

yea i dunno if you got to see my blades but they were pretty much messed up. And i forgot all abotu the little rubber peice that went around the trubo inlet cause i made a custom PVC pipe intake so i just shoved the rubber peice inside the coupler and now that i think about it, it was alittle loose and they did have the intake off, alright it all clicked now. YOur blades look alot better then mine did thoguh LOL, o well upgrading to a small 16g.

My car did that right after i bought it.. pulled in the driveway and the car cut off.. turbo blew looked like a 3am forest fire. cause a massive oil pressure drop and tore my crank all to hell..
