1g transmission/clutch

i need help figuering something out. i put a newer 6 bolt engine on my 91 tsi and used the same transmission and clutch so i put it all together and it turns on fine but when i want to put it in any gear i cant it makes a loud grinding noise and wont go in gear at all i already toke it off and checked out the clutch and it is on there fine and tried again and the same problem. does anybody have any ideas on what it can be thanks.

can you put it in gear with the engine off.

i would say try bleeding the clutch system, if that fails then it could be a faulty slave or master cylinder.
