I was working with the Nunnemachers and Hansons in their PGT Subarus at Ojibwe last weekend for Rally-America's 7th national event. The rally is very well run, weather was perfect (although dusty) and the roads were awesome! From what I saw of the stages it was very flowing with lots of crests. Our goal for the weekend was to finish, and by doing that gain as much experience and seat time as possible. At the front of the PGT pack the guys were pushing hard, and as a result the number of competitors would dwindle every couple of stages. Hansons were in the thick of the battle and fighting for podium. They were 2nd in class before tagging a large rock on SS5, which put them out of the rally.
Leaving the last service of the weekend we found ourselves 2nd in class. The car had to leave service with a badly damaged control arm (which allowed a 1/2in. of play from front to back of the RF wheel), a bent rear lower link, and a finicky co-driver/map light. There were only a couple of stages left, but we crossed our fingers because the last stage was 24 miles long. Sure enough about 11 miles into the last stage the PGT leader, Pikes Peak winner Stephan Verdier, was off just short of the lake (picture). Heath and Heidi finished the stage (at a reduced pace, just to make sure!) and won PGT and got a 9th overall!
It was quite the treat for us crew to watch as they sprayed the champagne. This finish catapults us into 4th in the PGT championship with 2 rallies left. The next event is the Colorado Rally in Steamboat Springs, unfortunately the tow from Milwaukee to CO adds more days off work/school for everyone and at this point we are not sure we'll make it. LSPR is the final event, and we plan on being there for sure!
Here's a couple of pictures I snagged.
