Want to know what NASA class you'll be in?

Yes, that's the NASA online car classifier.

It's currently coded for 2006, but NASA expects to have it edited for the 2007 season soon.

Wow, as is I'm only in PTC, that's good news I guess.

49 mod points if I don't bring my chip burner to the track, 52 points if I do bring my chip burner to the track. At 49 points it says I'm in PTC.

I'm in, and have been building for PTB for now. I'll start in PTC, and move up firmly into PTB when I get the wheels/tires/suspension that I'm looking to purchase. If I'm not careful, the new rules (especially regarding tires and turbo cars) are going to bump me up 1 or more classes on top of that.

So, I'll be in PTE...

Do I stand a chance?

What kind of cars will I be competing against?

Your base class is PTE, for every 20 modification points, you get bumped up a class.

If you actually are in PTE, depending on what you took points on you could be very competitive.

I have a feeling that you just saw the top "base class" and didn't scroll down to look at what class you are actually in.

If a Stock talon took 19 points in Tires, brakes and suspension IE: throw some 255-275 wide hoosiers on the car which would be 7 points + 3-4 for width over stock for a total of 11 points. Lighten the car by just under 100 lbs (FREE). 7 points for Koni's and springs (4 for shocks, 3 for adjustable ride height perch) for a total of 18, and I'd take that last point on "non OEM brake pads". I think this car would pretty much clean up in PTE.

For 07 the rumors have been that A) camber will be free, B) Non OEM brake pads will be free, and tires will cost more. Also modifications to OEM turbo cars, and using forced induction on NON oem FI cars will cost more points as well.

The above example would run some damn fast lap times for TTE/PTE though. And may be something I'll try as well If I can find another clean 1g for cheap.

Uh-Oh... Looks like the 07 rules might be bumping us up further than I feared!

They haven't released the TT/PT rules yet, but they released the ST rules. Super Touring incorporates what was PTU, PTR, and SU. They are now ST2, ST1, and SU.

They classify cars using a modified Hp/Weight classification. Essentially you take your Vehicle weight and divide by your Dyno (peak) wheel horsepower:
3100/350 =8.86 This would be okay, but:
AWD penalty is -.5, Weight penalty is -.25, and Tire bonus is +.4
This leaves me at an adjusted Weight/hp level of 8.61, which is in ST2!!!!!! This is for a car making 350AWHP, weighing 3100 lbs, and with 255-275 wide tires.

Shit.

Link.

Looks like i'm going to be loading up on some ballast in the rear (allowed up to 250 lbs.) This will put me, and most likely many other modified DSMs in the top tiers of TT/PT. As long as I'm not in ST, I think i'm happy.

Look for the 2007 rules update to come sometime tonight. The update to this online classifier should come shortly after.

Cross your fingers on the tire and turbo rules! :sosad:

The way I see it, more points leading to a higher classing is better. What tangible things will you walk away with from a race? More likely pictures than a trophy. If all I was gonna get was experience and some pictures, I'd rather have the meanest cars possible on the track with me. I'd rather have shiny Porsches in the picture with me than primered VWs and whatnot. And who will blame you for losing to a prepped Viper and other respectable supercars.

Snap the shot right before you're lapped, and it'll look like you were doing well.

Well hell, that's one way to think about it.ROFL

I personally don't like being a moving chicane on the track though OMG I would actually like to make this hunk'o'junk competitive though. Yeah, it's fun... but it'd be more fun if I was winning, thus getting sponsors, thus not paying as much to race. All most people want is a chance to win.

When I do my first event, I want it to be pretty competitive and cars placed in groups they should be in. I don't want to be in my stock 92 awd up against a modified corvette out there.

I'd prefer that it all came down to driver skill, not the car you're driving.

The problem with spec racing is that in the end it comes down to money chasing money. The rules are SOO strict that people have to chase (and spend huge money on) that last horsepower or hundreth of a second. There are people who pay huge $$$ into things like spec miata in the order of 5 grand, for 5 more horsepower, because those 5 more horsepower will win the race. This is why some spec classes have an "purchase option" where any competitor can buy another competitors engine/car for a set price. Kind of crappy in my book, but that's how it works.

I like being able to race people chasing laptimes in different ways. A guy wants to use his points on horsepower, that's cool. A guy wants to use his points for aero, that's cool too. A guy wants to use a few points on horsepower, a few on aero, and a few on tires. That's another approach. The choice of mods allow wildly different cars to compete against eachother.

So in a non-spec car race several things make the racing attractive to me:

-I can race MY car. I don't have to drive the spec car which would never be awd and turbo.
-I get to pick the mods. My car might be faster with certain mods on certain tracks. Other cars, tracks, etc. will respond differently to mods.
-I can pick the class based on how I mod.
-Races will be more fun since there'll be all kinds of cars. Some are faster in the straights, others faster in the corners. That makes for lots of passes instead of a Formula 1 follow-the-train race.
-There's a lot more to talk about and learn.

These are just some of the reasons. If I thought about it, there'd be a ton more. I love non-spec racing!!

Ack! The suspense is killing me. Word on the NASA forums is now it'll be Friday before rules and car classification is finalized for 2007. WTF

Looks like I'm PTA with around 91 Total Points. So my photo ops would be pretty good! Not that I'd be allowed in without any HPDE yet.

Well from looking at the ST rules. I am really liking the change. With a turbo car you can easily tune it right to the max of the rules for a given class. I ran it for my car and I can gain 70hp and still stay in ST1. Which is a class lower than it would be by the old points system. Its was an SU car.

Jeez, you guys rack up alot of points.

As my car stands now:
Your 7 base points plus your 48 modification points (55 total points) puts you in PTC.

Where I'd like it to be after this winter:
Your 7 base points plus your 58 modification points (65 total points) puts you in PTB.

May be able to shave some points off with things like ditching the camber bolts or not building a splitter.

Ouch 106 points :( I just spent the time to figure it out. I will wait till the new rules come out before I touch anything. 0nce the new rules are out, full speed ahead preping the car for next summer. Since Retune (E85), Tires, and Seat are a must I may start that early.
