Well, track weekend has come and gone and my talon & I are still intact (mostly). I didn't sleep much fri. eve, sat. morning, got the last few things piled into the car and left for the track. It's only a bit over an hour drive from my house to Road America & I arrived in plenty of time to register and get the car teched. I then went to find my friends and unload my racecar.
My sessions were first in the order so after the parade lap we went out onto the track. Over this off season several corners were repaved & we were the first people to put a tire to the new surface. Another interesting change was the ice on the track WTF under two of the bridges.
So, after taking it easy for most of the first lap, and my new brakes were showing their stuff, the front end starts shaking under braking! How is this possible?! Back to the paddock for a look-see. It appears that some fluid of some sort has found it's way onto the drivers side rotor. Ok no biggie, clean it off, double check all the fittings and bleeders, and wait for next session.
Repeat session one This time the caliper and rotor are removed & checked & cleaned again and I put in my set of street pads, not sure why, now. I think I missed my next session, so I sit down 'till forth session... I then notice A session cars headed to the track and discover I would have made third session! Doh!
Forth session, its Groundhogs day
Back to the paddock, tear into it again. where is this goo coming from?! Hint, never use anti-seize on the hubs with 2 piece rotors. The anti-seize was migrating between the hat & rotor and, well you know. I sent my friend Matt (props) into town for as much brake cleaner as a ten-spot can buy, rinse, repeat.
Back to the hotel, clean up, have a beer or two, head to the Wilderness Resort for dinner. Met up with the rest of our friends, had a great meal, fine conversation, a few cocktails, a few "Irish car bombs"
, a stop at another place...
Got to the track in time for my 3rd session
The wheel shake is de-intensifying
I start to push a tad harder on each turn, pass a few cars, get passed
now this is fun. Too bad my new mbc & I are not on the same page yet, as we are only running 10psi
I s'pose it's all for the better since three laps from the end, my (stock) clutch starts slipping after the more technical parts of the track. Ok, wing it till the end, call it a day. One point of note, street pads in front with endurance/race pads in back make for very entertaining corner entries, (even with HUGE front brakes) yee haw! Not so good for lap times, though.
Overall I'd say the weekend was a success, my lap times (the ones that were timed anyway) got down to around 3:05ish, not setting the world on fire exactly, but I'm getting more comfortable anyway. I met some new people, including Scott, who owns the former Archer Talon. Turns out he knows some of my friends, small world but I STILL wouldn't want to have to paint it
I'd like to thank my friends, in no particular order, Matt, Scott, Paul, Angela, Jack, Dell, Aaron, Radek, Micheal, Tim, David, John, John, Mike, Rich, Phil, Oscar, and some others whom my fragmented memory no doubt missed, for their help, humor and inspiration. Also thanks to RRE, Todd @ TCE, and Jake @ Top Street. I can't forget to mention the guy's pitted next to us with the C6 ZO6 (2:29s w/only pads & slicks
) for the brake cleaner.
I'll post pics if I can at a later date on this thread.
