took off egr vavle and junk was in their?

I have a 96 Talon TSI (FWD) and when i took of the egr valve in the two holes on the bottom ( about the size of a dime hole ) their was grey junk built up and i was getting the p1400 cel. could this be why? and should i just clean it all out?

Soot buildup, perfectly normal. You're probably ahead to just buy a new EGR.

In the spirit of DYI, if they are just loaded with deposits they can be cleaned with a wire brush and an old rat tail file for knocking the crud out of the port. Cleaning the seat will be the tricky part on the sealed can types if you don't have a vacuum pump to lift it off its seat.
