Steering loose - extra play

I have about an inch to about 1.5 inches of play int he steering wheel and checked under the car to see if anythgin related to steering was loose, but didn't find anythign with a quick inspection.
Any normal things to check that could cause this?

With the car off and the key in acc you have excessive play in the steering wheel correct?
If so you may need a new steering rack. If all your tie rods, ball joints and bushings look good that's probably the case.

Oh. OK. That's what I thought and was hoping there was something else, but I guess I can't win. I will wait on that.
