I was driving to work this morning when I noticed a very faint smell of something burning. It wasn't overwhelming or strong but you can definitely smell it. I didn't think nothing of it since I just poured some new oil yesterday. I was pretty sure it was the spillage burning off.

I was cruising nice and slow through a school zone when suddenly my car lost power and shut off! I tried to start her up but you can almost positively tell that there's no compression. I checked my gauges to see if anything was in the red and looked at my timing belt but everything is fine. I had to get a tow truck and have it towed to my local mechanic.

This was over 2 hours ago and my mechanic has already confirmed what I feared. Zero compression on all 4 :( He still hasn't really begun to see why it failed.

What would've caused something like this? I baby my car I would've expected small signs that something like this was going to happen.

what are my options if all 4 cylindars are dead? :(

update: all 4 cylindars DEAD

weird part is i had no warning, no smoke prior to this happening

I"m gonna take off the head and see what damage I can find.

UPDATE:

we took off the head and the damage is even worse than I thought. All 16 valves were bent and it looks like was the harmonic balancer was the culprit and not the timing as I originally thought. The harmonic balancer was in peices and failed. All the belts were in sad sad shape.

What I really need to know is how bad my pistons are. I was hoping I could get away w/ a head swap but it looks like I'll need a new motor. :(

Pics will come real soon...

More pics in my gallery. Am I screwed? :(

Cant really tell with all the carbon/oil on the tops of the 1 and 4 pistons but I dont think that the damage is bad enough to change the whole motor. Im sure that a rebuilt head would do the job.

Might as well slap on a 1g head and intake manifold.

Pull the pistons out, clean them, and inspect them.

Also, welcome to the Club. :thumb:

(The bent every valve club)

Mine were in worse shape then yours and all I did was use a dremel tool and removed the folded metal from the piston heads and bolted on my new head. Yours does not appear to be bad at all.

Leet makes a good point. I would pull the pistons, which can be done without removing the block, clean them up and inspect them. Also check your cross hatch on your cyl. walls and see how much wear you got. While your at it do a balance shaft removal. Nows a good time to freshin things up.

What wound up happening? I see a dirty motor with the head off, did you lose timing?

maybe if ya read the whole thred up till now you would have had that anwered :p the ignition damper failed, threw everything way off, messed up the rest of it, and poof dead motor....but revivable no doubts there, ive seen motors with the pistons in 2 halfs or part of it just jamed into one of the valves.....wanna know how to keep from doing that??? simple dont put a 200 dry shot of nitrous into a slightly modified 4 banger (slightly meaning catback+cold air intake) :p
