hi im new here, but i figure you guys can help me.

my daily driver is a 90 laser, N/A w/ 160k miles. 5 spd trany.

a week ago, i drove to 7-11 and parked. went inside, got a few things,
came out and it would not start up. me and my buddy called the tow truck, 20 minutes later he arives and just to make sure it is REALLY broke down, he atempts to start it up. it fires right up and is fine?!?!

so i drive home.

few days later, i drive to McDonalds on the way to school. park, go in, eat, come out and the damn thing dont start. i figure it will probably start again in 20 minutes. i wait, 20 minutes later or so, i start it up and it runs fine.

tonight, im on my way back from my evening class and im coming down a hill and sudently it just dies on me. i pulled over, waited for about 15 or 20 minutes, tried to start it up and it struggled to start, finally it did, but it ran rough w/ a check engine light on,

im thinking its the Fuel pump going out on me.

what do you guys think?

thanks!

great to be a part of the DSM board, im a Grand National/Turbo Regal owner and enthusist but i love the AWD turbo 1g DSMs

Thats what happened to my 85' S-10, same thing as you about howd I'd have to wait a while and then it would fire right up. Check your wires too for the fuel pump, make sure none are being grounded. Could be the pump itself too, keep in mind she is 13 years old.

Goodluck and welcome here,
Jeff

Coolant temp sensor!!! Very common problem. Car is warm, so it doesn't take much fuel to start. BUT...the coolant temp sensor is dead, sends no signal to ECU, ECU just pours fuel in, floods car. 20 min. later,Fuel evaporates, coolant cools down, car fires up.

I think, "Why the hell didn't he get it fixed after the first time?"

It's electric somewhere. I doubt it's the fuel pump. Pull the ECU and do the stink test, and that temp sensor idea sounds good, but won't it throw a CEL?

i'm almost positive the CEL would pop right up if the coolant sensor is busted but it couldn't hurt to check it. definitely sounds like you need a new ecu or capacitor replacements though.

hmm coolant sensor sounds like it just might be!

i dont smell any thing from the ECU, but i have not smelt it close up.

when a fuel pump fails, it usually fails and thats it i think.

we will see what my mechanic says, i droped it off this morning. i hope its the CLT sensor, that sounds like it would be much much cheaper than a new ECU or a fuel pump.

last night when the car died on me while driving, it did throw a code. the check engine light went on for a while.
it probably didnt throw a code before because the car didnt just die, it was off and didnt start.

ill let you guys know

thanks for all the help. i should have gotten it checked out the first time, but its a beater and my 87 Turbo T has a full tank of race gas for the track this saturday, so i didnt want to have to drive it while the laser was in the shop.

thanks again!
