Ok guys, I'm at my wits end chasing down the problem with my car. I'd figure I'd post the symptoms with hopes someone can help me determine what I've been overlooking.

Here's the recipe:
-96 GSX
-SBR 6-bolt with Ross pistons, 1G rods, new bearings, no B-shaft.
-Head rebuilt with SS Valves, Crower Springs, HKS cams 264/272, AEM cam gears, 1G intake mani, 2G ported exhaust mani. 90 CAS (even tried a 91 CAS)
-660 injectors, Buschur FPR (43psi), T25 for break-in and stock pump till I get it on the lift to break the fittings.
-And the all important DSMLink with the EGR and Misfire turned off.

The Problems:
At TDC the marks on the gears line up. I used the 90 CAS, swapped plug wires, flipped injector plugs at the ECU, no MAP sensor.

With the CAS centered like recommended for start-up, it reads 22 degrees at idle on my DSMlink (version 1). I rotate the CAS to drop the timing as far as it goes and the lowest it reads on the Link is 11 degrees but bounces up and down as high as 16 at idle. I hit it with the timing light and the mark is all over the place. The car runs like crap and bogs on acceleration yet the boost reads 11 psi. Now its starting to idle worse and has a faint popping, possibly misfire sound.

Also there is no voltage reading from the O2 at idle. On the Link, it just reads 0.0 and once in a while spikes up to .06; RPM @750-850

I've read I'm supposed to match the Link and the timing light at, at least 8 degrees, which should equate to 5 degrees timing as if the ECU was grounded. But I can't get it lower or to stay steady.

I've spent days checking, tinkering and rechecking, what did I miss?

It could be a bad CAS. I had one take a sh&t on me. It could be "seeing things blurry". It may have intermittent reading problems.

To check cas alignment you don't need to bother with bumping the engine over to TDC. It can only line up two ways on and 180 out.

It has an alignment mark on part that engages the cam.

This mark goes in the slot closest to the end off the part #s stamped into the end of the cam. Good lighting and you should be able to make them out. IF you can't see them align the marked (little triangle) prong of the two on the cas with slot which is also inline with the dowel on the timing sprocket (the pin that keeps the timing gear from spining on the cam).

Thanks for the info guys. Unfortunately I already did that.

I aligned the CAS spinner divot with the mark on the CAS case. And spun the engine to TDC just to make certain I installed it right. No go, even for the heck of it I inverted the CAS 180* to see if it would work. Nope. Even tried inverting the CAS on the Link. Still nothing. And I even tried a 91 CAS that came off a working car. :(

DSM Link has two modes for the cas signal. STD and inverted. You flipped wires around so make sure that the ECU is'nt set to invert it again.

Another thing you can do is check the CAS signals at the ECU connector pin for them. If you have sound wiring and can verify it it may be a problem elsewhere.

I know you can toggle the CAS to invert it or have it read normal. I tried both and the car acted the same exact way....ran like crap.

My wireing is sound, I soldered all the connections they are perfect, but its a good suggestion to check them at the ECU.

I'm going to try new cam gears as odd as it sounds. If I lay a ruler across all four guide marks on the AEM gears, they don't line up. The mark on each gear in the center lines up at TDC, but the lines outside the gears appear slightly higher than the center lines. \ - - /

Any other suggestion? Keep them coming please.

Sounds like your valve timing is hosed. I know this sounds stupid but have you tried running on the stock cam gears? It almost sounds like your a tooth off...

I am having the same problem as you are. 1G CAS in a 2G setup. I just got a 1993 hall effect type sensor, and a new OEM front O2 sensor. I'll let you know if it does anything. Basically my symptoms are the car turns on but it sounds like crap, if I press the throttle it sounds like a dying horse or something.

Well in efforts to get it running I for some reason decided to hunt furthur for the brown plug and found it inside the loom. So I grounded it and set the timing.

Still runs like crap. I pulled the plugs and found oil on top of the pistons.
