is this defective?

i just bought this pyrometer guage new from mach v motersports, and i notices the guage is sitting on 400 degrees. it has not even been opened yet. is it defective?

I'm not sure but my guess is that it always sits at 400 until there is power going to it and then it goes to 0. Just my thought... someone has to have the same one and will be able to tell you.

It's in the sun, does it feel a bit warm?

It's an electrical gauge. It needs tricity to move the needle. No telling where it might park itself after being shipped. Like corn flakes.
