Help! 91 eclipse gsx runs ok, but at 4000 rpm, the engine roars like a frickin t-rex. I am running with a gm maf / transltor set up configured very slightly lean @ mid and wot. It purrs like a kitten at idle, and revs smoothly all the way up to 35 before starting to get pissed off, and by 45 its calling all cops in a ten block radius. What gives???
:dsm:

my friend has the same problem, his balance shafts are off

big problem? nope

u can leave it that way, itll just be loud and vibrating

or get an eliminator kit and rid of that bad ass noise...or just reinstall them right

his rotated 180 degrees so we roated them back put a nice belt on it and bam

ur good to go

there bitches to get too and very time consumin like 6 hours
its worth it if u dont want that annoying noise

Eliminator kit or reinstall - both run about 6 hours?
I really would rather the low tune of an exhaust system over the engine screaming like its about to give birth to a Lancer. Thanks

Bringing back and old thread from the dead.

Little back ground on my problem first of all.

The other night we were out tuning my car and we had the sucker running great at like 18 pounds.

My friend was driving and all the sudden I smell oil and he is like no I smell gas and I'm like damnit I smell oil and hot shit. So anyway he is like everything looks fine and seems ok. Then he notices a loss in preformance so we pull into my friends drive. This was about a mile after we noticed the problem. We pull into the garage and notice oil spewing out.

Blew the oil seal between the oil filter housing and cooler. Now when we were in the garage and the car had like no oil we noticed the car made a knocking sound. Altho I dont think it was anything bad beause I hear this noise alot when I first start the car for like a brief second well the car starts and the oil starts to flow.

Anyway adding oil made the noise totally go away as soon as it started to flow and idled good. However as soon as we pulled out on the road the turbo didnt spool AT ALL. We figured that out though. The Hydrostatic thrust bearing is really stick. Ok easy fix, rebuild it.

So I drove the car without trying to boost it over to a friends to swap out turbo's to a spare and on the way I started to get this loud noise around 4k rpm. I figured it was the turbo trying to spool because the turbo was totally stand still at idle but under a lil throttle it would spin a bit. Just not enough to make boost.

Anyway turbo swapped and still got this problem. Its fine until I hit around 3500~4000+ and then you hear the most messed up loud whine you have ever heard.

I dont know if I would discribe it as a grind and whine mixed together or justa loud whine noise. Sounds like one of those Tornado fire department air horn whines when the there emergancy sirens go off. As soon as I'm back down below 4k or so it goes away. If I drive like totally normal, no boosting, I dont even get the noise.

My friend told me he had the EXACT same noise on one of his cars at 4 grand and yep I did notice it was rigtht around 4 grand. He didnt ever figure out what it was though.

Anyway this topic exactly discribes what I'm hearing.

I was going to stop driving my car but um is it true its no big deal?

If I could get away with driving until winter which is only a couple months then fix it over the winter that would be great.

Opinions?

Some type of bearing failure, prolly not anything rod or main breaing related, since its not knocking. I would say it might be from starving the head of oil. Could be something to do with the cam guides and all.

Its coming from the drivers side lower half of the engine and starts around 3500 and gets really pissy at 4k+

Everyone I've spoken to says balance shafts. One guy seems to think I blew out my belt but from what that guy in the second post said, his friends didnt break.

Hey I just put a motor in a car and started it up 20 mins ago and its doing the same thing. A whining sound from the turbo area. But my turbo seems to be fine. And it idles fine but it wont rev over 3k at all. If you find out what it is please post it up.

I know whats up with my car. Seems I've trashed a balance shaft bearing or so everyone thinks.

I can rev all the way to the rev limiter but around 3.5 it gets bitchy, at 4k+ it whines LOUD.

I highly doubt the belt jumped timing though as thats almost next to impossable for a balance shaft belt to jump.
