Overdrive...
I have a 91 Tsi AWD. Unfortunately it is an auto...

My problem is that when I engage the Overdrive button on my shifter while cruising, the transmission just slips. It feels like it goes into neutral. If I engage it before I start driving, the transmission will shift through gears 1-3 like normal and then when it reaches the appropriate speed to shift to 4th gear, its just slips. What is wrong with my tranny?

Note: Twice since I've owned the car, the overdrive has worked. Once in the city, and once on the highway.

the internal clutch could be shot, if u drive a overdrive tranny around a lot with the over drive on (previous owner) you get decent gas milage but u also tear the gear up, if for say u r goin up a gradual hill on a daily basis with the over drive on itll really mess it up, soo

i would take it to a shop and have em check the 4th gear, the same thing happened to me on my automatic camaro with the 750r tranny,
the over drive SUCKS,

unless you are on the freeway just cruzin at like 65 or 70 or whatever then i would turn it on, other wise your doin more harm than good

The previous owner of my car never turned off the Overdrive when they had it, and about a year after I got it, it would slip when it was going into overdrive sometimes. It went away when I had the tranny fluid flushed. Probably not a permanet fix, but it worked. I leave my OD off unless im on the interstate, and I actually get better gas mileage in town with it turned off. You get better pickup too.

When it used to slip, it would only do it when i had let off the gas, or medium acceleration. If you are accelerating pretty hard, or just maintaing your speed, it would go into gear like normal.

Atleast its just your overdrive doing that, on my first car, the 2nd gear did it ALL THE TIME. It was bad, not knowing if the thing was gonna work right when your merging into traffic and stuff.
