i started my car and it makes a whinning noise for a couple seconds then goes away and when i was driving the other day it started agiain.
From inside the car it sound like it is coming from the middle to the right side of the engine bay

yeah I have that on my 1g what gives....If I am sitting in the driver's seat, it sounds like its 30 degrees to my right in the engine...when I get in the bay I cant seem to find it or it wont do it, (just my luck) I thought maybe a bad injector os something like that ?

Please someone help us out

Sounds like it's something that turns is going bad. Maybe some sort of pulley or lack or lubrication on something. I was going to say transmission, but you said right when you start it. Have you checked your pulleys for play? Checked all belts? Take your power steering belt and accessory belt off and check the water pump for play. While you're at it, check the crank, alternator, and powersteering pulley. I know you say it doesn't do it while turning, but maybe after a while of sitting, the pulley is getting locked up a little somehow. Worth a shot :thumb:

I've had alternators make whining noises. Sometimes an overly tight alternantor belt causes that same sound.

Hey, to the two that are having the problem. I get something like that from my car, too! I wonder if it's the same thing though. It sounds like it's coming from the same place as you describe but I don't get it at start-up. I hear it when my rpm is between 2 and 3k and I'm not accellerating nor getting off the throttle. When it falls below 2k rpm or I give it some gas, the noise goes away (or maybe I just can't hear it anymore when stepping on the gas and the engine revs harder). Does that sound like a symptom that you guys are getting too? I'd like to figure this thing out before something breaks. I've just started to notice it about 2 months ago.

later...

it does happen at idle (most noticable then b/c I dont have the radio on at that time), however I do hear it at other RPMs !? I havent had anytime off of work lately so I can't do any diagnostics on the car, but will get around to it... hopefully b4 she blows up on me

As this applies to turbo DSMs, you're not trying to stand on it when it's cold are you? I've noticed that if I give it too much boost when it's dead cold it makes that squeaking noise.

Also if you have time, check the power steering belts, if water or oil has gotten on to them they make that squeaking noise when the car is cold because whatever is on it hasn't evaporated, or you have an oil leak and the oil is hitting your PS belts.

If anything, I'm hearing this noise when the car's been running for awhile and is nice and warm. And it occurs when I'm not even pushing the turbo....just holding it about 2500 rpm. It's not a squeaking noise....more like a wooshing....almost like when the wind hits up against the car as you're driving but much louder and more noticeable. That's why I didn't notice it at first because I just thought that it was the wind.

My 95 AWD TSI makes kind of a whinning noise when its runnin.. but i always thought it was the water pump. but i replaces the water pump and it still does it... its just like a constant noise when the car is runnin... i dont know if this has anything to do with it or not..... but the other day i cleaned my motor with carbeurator (sp?) cleaner.. and it quit makin the noise for about an hour... then it came back.. but i can definately tell its comin from the drivers side of the motor

To all you 2G guys with this problem...
Do you have the stock turbo still? I had a very serious whinning soundcoming from my '95 GSX that was actaully the turbine wheel rubbing inside the houseing( compressor side). If you just take the boot off (between the filter and the turbo) and use your finger to see if the wheel moves up/down, you may just find the problem. It is hard to describe sounds in a typed message, but, I would say it almost sounds like a jet spooling up. It whistles and sounds like pressurized air at the same time. If this describes your noise I suggest you check this before you send any more aluminum through your instake and poss your oil system.

P.S.
I hope I'm wrong
Good luck

I had a problem like that and it turned out to be a exhasut mainifold leak.. a stud broke off and it was leaking and making a whinning noise but whould seal its self back up once it got warn enough then if i would really get on it it would make it again.

That's a good point. My problem was actually not noticable unless I was under boost. It did make a little noise when it was cold as well. I am fairly sure I had no exhaust leaks atthat time. I am 100% certain the turbo was "TOAST". Like I said, just pull that boot off the inlet and use your finger to check for play. You should have no problem finding out tht way.

Good Luck
