Question 1.8 valve cover gasket replacement

Does anyone know what is needed to replace the valve cover gasket on a 1.8 other than the actual gasket? Some kits say they come with semi-circular plug and grommets. Do I really need to replace this? Also, can I use RVT around the gasket or does it have a track already built into the cover? Is there any certain amount of pressure that I should torque the bolts down to when I'm done? I need to do this soon as I will be selling the car and I want it to be in good shape for the person who buys it.

Get the kit w/grommets & plug-it's actually cheaper than the other one at AutoZone. You don't need any sealant the gasket fits in a groove on the cover. As always get the gasket surfaces as clean as possible without scratching them. Don't know torque I've just done it by feel and it works OK for me, but I've been at this awhile. Don't get nuts and keep them even.

thanks

Thanks for the info. I ended up getting the kit without the grommets because nobody had it in stock, but the grommets I had were in really good shape and I put some rubber revitalizer on them and they were good as new when I put them back on. Just for everyone's info, you're supposed to torque these down to 5ft/lbs.
