I change the crank pulley with a brand new oem....im talking from the dealer....and Its still wobbling in and out bad enough to make a noise with the timing belt cover.....what could it be???? surely my six bolt isnt walking???? please tell me what to do.

Ok here is the background......I have been driving the car with the sound of a pack of chirping birds coming from under the hood for a while which I thought was just a bad belt well one day when I looked at the balancer it was wobbling in and out looking from the top of the motor down.....it was not moving up and down at all(also had a whir whir kind of noise that was deeper in tone which I thought was the ac belt coming into contact with the lower cover).....so I order a replacemnt balancer from sbr......which turned out to be a bad pulley out of the box and the center falls out from the outer ring......well since I had to wait to work things out with them and my car could not sit for as long as it has been taking......I get one from the crysler dealer......just installed it today and the birds are gone but it is still wobbling in and out the same amount as the previous balancer was and is making the deep whir whir noise without the ac belt on??? I know the noise I am hearing is the new balancer still coming into contact with the lower cover....there is no other explanation for that noise. At least to the best of my judgement.

Are you sure the four bolts are tight and it's sitting flat when tightened down?

yeah I wedged a ratchet attached to the crank nut against the driver side axle and cranked the four bolts down as much as I could get without really hammerin on it... you know how there is supposed to be a little dowel for the alignment of pullet? well when the previous owner did the timing job I think he lost it because I dont have this little pin that I had read about unless it is supposed to be permanetly attached to the crank sprocket and if so then that is my problem as he probably installed the pulley on top of the little dowel and crushed it in there.........I lined up the holes correctly and I can only assume it is sitting flush.

hahaha great! well that has to be associated because there is no pin on mine....the entire surface of the crank sprocket is smooth with nothing sticking out I guess I will have to go out and pull it apart again and take another look now that I know this little tidbit of info.

Have you checked the crankshaft end play?

Crank sprocket bolt still tight with correct washer and you are sure the balancer is not sitting on top of the dowel pin?

Are the bolt heads on the timing cover still holding the cover down near the crank? I've seen the covers wear through in that area. Allthough there is a bolt in there, it wasn't holding the cover.

Pull the new balancer off and look for rub marks on the back of it. This will tell you if it's still hitting the cover.

And someone could have put that pulley on backwards. It is possible haha I managed to do that some how ROFL...good thing I noticed when i was putting the harmonic balancer on that the pic wasn't there

ok I went out and tore it all down again.....if yall will tell me how to put pictures up in here I took some to show yall......ok another question....are all the bolts that hold the cover the same length? cause I have one bolt missing I think that should go in a hole right behind where the rim of the balancer covers up kind of in the middle of the timing cover and I can get an equal length bolt in there but I dont want it to go too far and interfere with anything going on in the timing area. That seems like it will take care of the rubbing issue but why oh why would the balancer still wobble? I checked and the dowel is not there.....could the sprocket really possibly be installed backwards? man this previous owner left me with a headache if so..........

tell me how to post pics and we can dig more into this....

As far as pics go, the easiest way I know is upload them to a hosting site like say photobucket and then they will give you a link to each picture. Just copy and paste into your reply.

Click the "Go Advanced" button below the post box. Then scroll about halfway down and under Additional Options you'll see a button titled "Upload/Edit Photos". You should be able to figure it out from there. Make sure when you upload photos they're 700x700 or less.

There are 3 different length bolts for the cover. See this VFAQ for the lengths and corresponding locations. The image/table is almost at the bottom of the page.

ok I figured that ....one thing down........why would it have been pushed in.....is it a floating pin? the one on yours looks to be solidly attached, is there a difference 6/7bolt? And as you can see it looks like nothing should be stoping the pulley from mounting flush......I found a bolt that seems to be working for the one that I have missing on the timing cover so that might give me a little more clearence for the balancer but still dont know why the pulley itself still has side to side movement:toobad:

Sounds like you found the wobbling problem. Maybe the pin is not quite flush causing the wobble. Your lower cover is rubbing. That could be the whir whir sound;)They are both floating pins

Ha yeah that is definately the whir whir sound and no I dont think that pin is the problem....it is not sticking out at aallll i rubbed my finger over it countless times. FOr sure it is flush.

Thanks for all your guys help....I think I am just gonna say #### it for now and put it back together and just drive it.....now that I put that bolt in the middle of the lower timing cover it should be rubbing anymore and I just am speechless about why the balancer is still wobbling could it be my freaking luck that I got TWO bad balancers for the total of like 230$ bucks wasted???? One from slowboy's distributer and 1 directly from OE????

THANKS TO YOU ALL i KNOW i CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON THIS SITE.

whoops caps lock

The pulley can be put in incorrectly, as I did this the first time I put mine back on. See if you can somehow get the pin out. If not, I'd put the pulley back on correctly (with the pin lined up with the hole) and torque the bolts down to 14-22 ft.lbs. Then see if you can move it by hand in any direction.

I will go and try to dig it out right now.....but I know the pulley was on right because I was sure to line those up and I also tried moving it by hand and the dam thing didnt budge..

I dont really have a choice sadly....my buicks topend is tore down cause my ported heads are getting gone through right now....so I have nothing else to drive....not saying I am gonna be beating it like this but i do have to drive it.....I just went and could not dig the pin out it seems to be wedged in there pretty good. Its all back together now and no noises so that a good thing but still side to side wobbles. I guess when slowboy sends me a replacement Ill throw it on there and see if that doesnt fix it....i aint about to spend another 115 bucks on ANOTHER freaking pulley.......what a nightmare

Your rollpin has been forced through the lower cam sprocket and is now rubbing on the metal behind it. The threads on your sprocket also appear about halfway stripped-out.

Stop driving that car.

HOLY HELL will this have junked my block? I have a strange feeling it has been like this for a while. How could the roll pin have been shoved in there like that?

Someone not realizing it was there to aid in putting on the harmonic dampener. They probably just put it on and bolted it down, or it was sitting quite flush so they gave it a few whacks and then it went on fine. Or something completely different. It needs to be fixed though.

anyone know how I can aquire a new crank sprocket? aside from the yard. Im gonna start ordering my timing components.
