my 1997 gsx it automatic and basically all stock, i want to start upgrading internals on it, is it a bad idea to start with cams? i just got a MHI big 16G but havent installed it yet, can anyone point me out where to start with internal upgrades....?

If you don't have all the other supporting mods, like Paul said, cams wouldn't be the best choice as you will run out of things, such as fuel with the evoIII, well before you even think about needing cams. If you have all the "other pieces", then yes cams would be a good place to start with engine internals, I would also throw in some ARP head studs while your in there.

I'd get some injectors, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, a way to tune the car, Front mount intercooler, exhaust... before I bought cams.

i do have a pretty nice front mount intercoolor that is waiting to get put on the car and i have a 3.5in catback exhaust with 3in downpipe, i also have a greddy type s bov on the car

what are a couple basic bolt ons that you would suggest to get me headed more in the right direction before the cams

i checked out that tech guide, i might have to start with whats affordable and work my way up

Okay, since you don't have all the "supporting mods", then no, cams wouldn't be the next logical choice, as I mentioned above with just increasing the boost a small amount vs the stock level with that 16g & you'll be at the limits of the stock fuel system. Injectors & a fuel pump should be next on your list as well as a way to control them & log what your doing (ie SAFC & pocket logger or DSMLink). Depending on your long term goals you may also need an adjustable fuel presuure regulator depending on what fuel pump you select.
