just recently did a evo 3 16g turbo install with a evo 3 manifold running a 46mm external wastegate. the guy i bought the turbo from said it held 16psi strong before he took it off his car and now i can't get it to build boost. my vacuum at idle is 20 but half throttle/WOT my car just makes a lot of noise and the boost gauge sits at 0. when i give it gas it sounds like a super charger whining but im going no where... can my turbo be leaking somehow? we did a boost leak test and it sounds like there's air escaping around the turbo somehow... anything will help at this point. i guess im not sure if i hooked the WG up correctly either, blocked off the top port on it and ran a vacuum line to the LICP and left my MBC disconnected altogether...thanks for the help guys. (picture is of the car after the install)

If the boost leak test was performed and air is leaking from the turbo, I would say it is most likely the compressor housing o-ring...It is just a large o-ring that seals the compressor cover to the center section in conjunction with a snap ring. They just get old and wore out over time. Here is the part number MD613776.
check out v-faq for some pictures.

Did you check the turbo to see if it was good before you installed it? Like was there any shaft play in it? Is your waste gate stuck open? I have no experience with the external ones, so I can't really help you if that is the issue.
Get a bottle of soapy water or some Simple Green and spray it on the turbo and BOV, to see if you can visually see where this air is escaping. That will be the easiest way to see what the problem is.

Not to mention both wheels where chewed up.
I think Corey should throw that turbo through the guy he bought it froms windshield...
but thats just me and I'm an angry person.:|

alright... thanks for the advice guys. sd_ff DID 97% of the install work on this and got to feel the disappointment when i gave it WOT and felt nothing. WTF
thanks for the help with the install dan...

:beatentodeath: next time i guess

What did you do with the internal gate? Was it welded shut? Or did you just take the actuator off. Because if so thats why your not getting boost. :tease:

You know I know better than that Sam:p
In all honesty, the whole set up that Corey bought was a hack job. All respect to Corey, he just didn't know what he was looking at and bought it with out knowing for sure. My opinion, buy a GOOD 16g internally gated, go back to his stock ex-manifold and run that. yes the flapper door was welded shut, and whoever welded the flapper and the manifold believed in "the bigger the blob, the better the job"

the internal flapper was HALF ASSED welded shut... just tack welded at best, i was thinking the same thing but id think id be building some boost because it is closed just not sealed completely. it just sucks cause when i get on it i can hear all that air just rushing out and my car just makes a lot of noise and sits there. even if that flapper is leaking down into the housing would it be leaking all my boost?
