I bought a 97 gst i been through it all a transmission rebuild, cracked exhaust manifold, overheating issues. i just got my car back from my now ex-wife i opened the hood and my heart stopped. the entire engine is covered with black exhaust mess. there are two nuts missing frome the exhaust manifold bolts, the car is back- firing, and stalling, sometimes it won't crank. the transmission only has 2 and drive no overdrive no low gear, the check engine light is on, but will not give any error code at all, it dosn't read anything. i have seen somethings before but nothing like this help please.....

Sound like the crack manifold along with manifold studs missing you have a really bad exhaust leak. The engine backfire maybe due to spark plugs and wires so I'd recommend you getting new spark plugs, wires and check the coil pack. As for the car overheating, making sure there is coolant and if it still has the overheating problem check the water pump and change the temperature sensor. If all those do no solve any of the problems I'd have to say a blow head gasket.
