Need Help with a 96' Eclipse Dieing

I am Trying to help a friend out on his car, this is not intended for me. The car is a 96' 5-speed eclipse with a little over 150k on it. Just changed the oil and oil filter, cleaned the fuel filter out. The car also have a AEM cold-air intake(longtube, goes down by the bumper). The car was bought with it there. The car will start up fine, idle fine, drive it around the block but after that, much further and the car will just die. Is this a common problem on these cars? What could be going on? Thanks for the input

No the car doesn't start back up, the spark plugs are not firing after the car dies. But after a few minutes the car fires back up.

how are you able to tell the plugs are not firing?

i mean replace the plugs, they're like $2 each and if you haven't touched them, god only knows when they've been done....plus plugs like to get hot and stop firing...

Plugs have been replaced, and to tell if there firing or not, you pull the cap off, stick a screwdriver into it just were the make a connection, place it close to some bare metal, turn the car over, see if there is a spark jumping from the screw driver to the bare metal, if not it's not firing.

Sounds like you have an overheating coil pack. Find another pack to swap it out with.

Do you have any CELS ?

What else besides the fuel filter, plugs, and oil have you tried?

Sounds like a cam/crank position sensor too.

Coil pack be good place to start like absolute suggested.

Well, u know it has no spark. All it takes is to trace why there isn't spark. U need to ask urself what gives this car spark. BTW, this car doesn't have a cap. This car requires a cam signal to tell the injectors and plugs to fire. Check signal to coil to make sure u have a signal, do this b4 u take it on a drive and also when the car dies. If u have a solid pattern on both instances, sounds like a dead coil.

i also have this same 96 n/t with the same problem. gas was about 1/4 tank one cold night, so when it died the first time i used dry gas and filled it up. next morning i went for drive, and went to pull away from the light, dead. it started ran and idled fine both mornings so i figured bad coil. put in a brand new coil, took a small test drive and when i got back i sat there letting it run and i got the check engine light while the car started stuttering like the gas was being cut then bang dead. all my electrical works radio, moon roof. next i will change plugs/wires and fuel filter, test injectors but i dont think thats it. it wont start after it dies untill it cools down. i had this problem in my integra once and in the distributer when we changed the coil we were told to change another part (cant recall the name). the way the person worded was, "the unknown part talks back and forth with the coil and that they usually go bad together" obviously different car/setup, but would it be simmular in this case? if not what could it be?

after beating myself up over this problem i talked to someone who did alot of repairs on these cars and i was told coil, not it, then cam angle sensor. they said they recall changing alot of those when they worked at the dealership. we will find out tomarrow when i change it and ill post back to confirm. ill try to put a photo up of its location just in case you dont know. it would have helped me days ago!

well, after a combination of plugs, coil, c.a.s., and a sticky t.b. i put all the parts back on hoping my cars not gonna die again, but before i fired it up i got a weird urge to check my fluids while i was under there. coolant was low, dip stick was bone f***ing dryWTF and i didnt see any puddles because its collecting on the frame arm. i dont know if these cars have an auto shut off for that or not (why my car was dieing) but im actually glad it was shutting off or id be in to deep right now, luckily there was no major damage and im back out beastin, looking for the p.o.s. cars that revved by me while i was on the side of the road.
