You have the dreaded lash adjuster click. These motors are notorious for this and when the oil gets a little dirty then they start ticking and clicking. They will make a lot of noise especially when the engine is cold or has set a while. If it is doing this when it is hot then you will have to replace them. The intake lash adjuster are usually the evil doers. There are upgraded lash adjusters you can by often called the 3g adjusters not for the 3g dsm but the 3rd release of this part. It has basically a larger hole for the oil to keep the adjuster firm against the roller arm. The clicking comes from them being stuck allowing for excessive clearence. The clicking can set you knock sensor off causing your timing to get pulled and as a result loss of power and it running like crap. These can be changed for like $8 each or less. There is a guy selling them I think in Texas for cheap. They are made there or something and he can get them for like real cheap. Anyway, you don't need to pull the cams to replace them. The service manual as well as there are plenty of posts that show you how to pop the roller arm out and access the adjuster. These are one of the main flaws in these motors. I use 20w-50 synthetic race oil and I still get a click from time to time. I have heard that Lucas oil additive can be useful as well as running a couple of quarts of ATF a couple of hundred miles before you change your oil might unstick them. It depends on how much crap is in them. I would reccomend trying Lucas first for $8 before you tear apart or replace anything. Good luck and I hope you get it sounding like a sewing machine again.

hey i have to thank you for the info :thumb: i dont know much about dsm motors so am new to these i have messed around with a lot of the honda motors but never dsm so i have never had this problem, but i just bought my car and the last owener had not done an oil change in a while.

Yeah Honda's are completely different more reliable motors however DSM's when running right are the best most powerful little motors. I have a WRX and my Talon will blow it off the road. When that thing is running right there are few cars around here that can keep up with it at anytime of the year. If you cannot get rid of the noise with oil change let me know I can direct you to the next step. You should run a synthetic oil like at least mobil or better. I use amsoil race oil which is kinda spendy at $8 qt. I have been looking at lucas products as they make several different race oils but I have not got a price. I would only use a regular oil when breaking in a ew motor where you are going to change the oil after about 500 miles. Keep us posted!

Lifters develop varnish over a period of time which reduces the travel of the valve inside of the lifter. This creates slack and leads to the tapping noise you have encountered.
Sometimes changing oil to Mobile 1 full synthetic with Lucas Oil Stabilizer cures the ticking. But a very inexpensive, easy, and effective way to eliminate lifter tick is add a can of “Restorer” to oil (Walmart or any auto store has it). It works every time on 4g63 engines and is the great "Wiseman Defiant blessed”! A more permanent solution would, of course, be to replace or clean them (see: http://www.vfaq.com/mods/lifters.html). But if you don’t want to deal with the time, effort, and expense of replacing or cleaning, just put a can of Restorer in. It’s so cheap you can afford to put one in after each oil change should the tick return. On my GST it lasts for 2-3 oil changes before the ticking returns. Other reported cures are adding Rislone or Sea Foam.

well i did the oil change but did not add the lucus so the noise did not go away am going to try and do the oil change again and this time ill use royal purpel racing oil with tha lucuz stuff and see what happens if not am just going to replace the whole head #### it that way ill have it portet while am at it:) but i just hope the noise goes away and save me the time and money, plus i need a car to get to work and am tire of driving my sisters mini van:coy:

but thankx for the advice

He has a 99 GST dont they already come with the 3 edition lifters, I have a 98 GST and I also experiance the lifter tick, then isthe tick wear related also as explained above?
Not to hijack this thread but I experiance some noise from the valve train, and it is different, after replacing the started with a junkyard laser one, beside that the car has been sitting for a while. Here is the high pitched sound video.

The 3 version lash adjusters wern't available until 2004 so no the 99's don't have them installed unless the were replaced after 2004 with 3rd version lash adjusters.
