Sry, kinda long...
Car:
99 GSX with a 6 bolt fully built motor. Running DSMlink through the 95 eprom ECU in it. MAF Translator for Airflow.
About a week ago, the alternator decided to finally die on me. After some struggle at Advanced Auto to get the right replacement (incompetant staff there) I swapped in a brand new one as well as a new battery because the old one was drained to low to be recovered.
Two days later, traveling down I95 at 70mph, the multiple cylinder misfire code pops up and she feels like shes running on 2 or three cylinders. At the time I thought that possibly one of the coils on my COP setup had gone bad so I nursed it home and swapped back on my old coil pack and plug wires. It started up fine and I thought the problem was fixed. Later that day it started happening again. So...I went through the basic check process for misfiring: AFR, Compression and Spark.
I retuned the car using DSMlink so I know the AFR is in the appropriate range when its not misfiring (when it does start misfiring it leans out dramatically). The fuel flow and airflow are all correct. Compression is 160 accross the board (warm) so that is not an issue. I checked the plugs and they are all fine as well. The wiring is also fine.
Through some trial and error I found that it will start misfiring at pretty much anytime, it can be five minutes or five hours after I start the car, and at pretty much any TPS range and any speed. I have driven it 100 miles without a problem and this morning it didn't make it out of the parking lot. The key to the temporary fix that I found is, if I shut off the car and unplug the ignition coil and then plug it back in, it works fine.
The only other thing that I can think of being wrong is that the ignition driver on the ECU is going and that it depends on the temperature of the ECU driver. Anyone else have any ideas and does anyone know who might be able to fix it for cheaper then buying a new one?
Thanks in advance
Dave
