I boughta 1998 gst with a ported 2g exhaust manifold, well i has midas look at my car because i feel my turbo spool but my car goes no where. he identified a bunch of hairline cracks and said thats why i was loosing boost. he said there was no real bad side effects other then loss of hp. ok so now im in the market for a new exhaust manifold.... does it matter that i have a 14b 1st gen turbo? or will any 2nd gen exhaust manifold work for my car? the guy at midas said he couldnt put a aftermarket manifold on so i will have to do it myself.. is it hard??? and how much am i looking to spend? and im assuming there is perofrmance version vs. stock? whats the difference..... any help would be much apreciated!

An OEM exhaust mani will work fine with the 14B.

If it's ported to match the turbo, it will spool better.

Expect to pay around $200 from the vendors for OEM.

Not a hard project, of course easier with a manual. Anywhere from 1 to 1-1/2 hours to all day to complete depending on your skills.

The difference is in how the runners and collector are ported. Of course the bigger the "hole", the better the flow, up to a point. Really depends on your goals for the car as to going with an OEM or upgrade.

I run a 16G turbo on the OEM 2G mani with the collector ported to match.

ok.. to sum it up...anything that works with a 2g will work for me regardless of the turbo i have... is this correct? so would a ported evo exhaust manifold work on my car?

Well, yes and no. Adapter plates can be made for just about any turbo combination. However, not every turbo will just "bolt up" to the 2G mani.

My 16G has an adapter plate between the turbo and mani.

I'm not 100% sure on the fit of the Evo mani, so I won't guess.

By nice looking polished one, Im assuming your talking about a tubular manifold? If so do a search there are many threads on these. While they look nice & will flow better then a cast mani, they aren't recommended for a daily driver as they tend to crack. The better made ones that are less likely to crack are fairly expensive, expect to pay $500 up to $1000. You can either get a 2g mani, an evoIII mani (which is larger and flows better) or an SBR cast mani (which flows better then the evoIII), some websites to check out:

www.slowboyracing.com
www.dsmparts.com
www.victoryperformance.com (very nice tubular mani, but $$$)
www.diamondstarmotorsport.com

While cracks will effect the spool up, if you just have a few hairline cracks, this probably isn't your issue. Do a boost leak test first & check the WG actuator.

The 14B requires an install kit for the 2G. I'm assuming the 14B is already installed and you just need a non-cracked mani. If so, then any OEM flanged 2G exhaust mani will work.

Never seen a polished one for sale.
