This is what my brand new QuarterMaster twin disk looked like after 3 days of normal break in driving and ONE light launch at 2 PSI !! The splines of one of the discs were sheared completely off. The input shaft on the trans looks fine.

I have installed MANY clutches into my car and never have I seen anything like this before. My last clutch was an act 2600 on a worn out PP and non resurfaced flywheel. It held up for a while... but after a mis-shift the springs popped out. So I figured I'd try the quartermaster that is recommended by this forum.

I TRIPLE checked both discs with the alignment tool before bolting up the transmission. It went in perfectly. Adam @ Devotuning assured me this clutch would handle alot of abuse - even clutch-brake launching.

Any ideas to what happened?

How many miles did you drive for your break in period? Info below is from Centerforce, but the idea is the same.

DO CENTERFORCE CLUTCHES REQUIRE A BREAK IN PERIOD?

YES. IT IS RECOMMENDED TO PROPERLY SEAT IN THE NEW PRESSURE PLATE & DISC ASSEMBLY TO ASSURE GOOD CLUTCH PERFORMANCE. CENTERFORCE RECOMMENDS 450-500 MILES OF IN TOWN STOP AND GO TYPE OF EASY DRIVING BEFORE APPLYING FULL POWER. IF YOUR DRIVING CONSISTS OF MAINLY HIGHWAY TYPE USE, THE BREAK IN PERIOD SHOULD BE LONGER THAN THE 450-500 MILES. IF THE BREAK IN PERIOD IS NOT PROPERLY FOLLOWED, CLUTCH LIFE AND PERFORMANCE CAN BE SACRIFICED.

I think the launch killed it, unless it was a defective product.

Break in period is there to provide even wear across the clutch disc surface. The 2 psi launch was no where what I normally launch. I've had no issues with the 2 ACT 2600's I've had prior. Heck, launching at 8psi would blow the tires off and the act held it no problem.

To me, it seems the center hub is made of very cheap, non hardened steel. The input shaft on the transmission shows no sign of any wear whatsoever but the teeth on the disc are gone. The heat you see on one of the discs is from babying it back to the shop once it failed. The other disc was still functioning.
