recently my car died. i checked the starter and it was fine, put a new battery in and it started, but now i have this high pitched sound that i hear constantly, the pitch also raises and lowers as the rpm of the car raises and lowers, it's never done this before. any ideas?

Belts can do that, especially if you have a failing crankshaft dampener pulley.
Does the noise happen in neutral while revving, or only when you are actually driving?

You can jack up the left front wheel, pull it off, pull off the splash guard and take a look at your crankshaft pulley.
There is a thin rubber insulator between the outer ring which drives all of your auxillary belts, and then there is the inner hub part that has 4 screws attaching to the crankshaft.

Check that out, and post back.

the noise happens all the time the car is on, whether it's parked in neutral or driving. it's not as loud as a belt squeel. it's quiet almost like what happens if you accidentally cross speaker wires too close to the speedo cable and can hear through the speakers. haven't been able to check the pulley due to not having a jack at school but i think the problem is electrical in nature. the battery stopped holding a charge and when i put the new one in this high pitched noise started. i just need to know if i'm gonna be fine for the 3 hour drive back home from school

maybe it's your alternator bearings? they tend to squeel when they are starting to go out. Could possibly be why your battery is not holding charge any more either.

seems a little wierd to me that all of the sudden the alternator would just stop working. i just had it replaced a year ago. any ideas as to electrical shorts that might drain the battery while the car's turned off?

was the alt rebuilt or purchased new?
most alt rebuild centres i figured out use used parts,my toyota 4 runner within 6 month warranty had a rebuild at least once every 6 weeks, the fourth time they were proud to mention that they installed a brand new stater(dam idiot).check to see what they actually rebuilt, whats included.just the problem fixed or the full meal deal(new bearings, stater, voltage regulater, rectifer, all them goodies inside,i bet not, sometimes its better off to buy new and save the hassel down the road, at least you know what your getting.
a year on a rebuild with possibly used parts you did well!
i ditto this on my nissan 240sx EXact same thing.i buy new from now on>
back to your problem, you may indeed have alt problems, first thing to do is let go the positive on battery terminal,do this while car is running, let it idle,if it will.then rev engine over.if its still(stays)running but wont take gas properly you may have a bad regulater
if she quits or cant, wont take gas,alt is a goner.with terminal off with a good alt the car sould not run any different.
hope this helps.i may be way off track on what your actual problem is,but over the net and not standing over your car to do a multiple of checks, you need to check things off one by one to actually figure out where the problem lies.could be simple as retenchening your belt,i doubt it but its worth a try.drop me a private message would love to help more if i can.i myself had the squeelies ,but i finally got it.before you start spending cash on stupid fixes that dont work, check the obvious.
