I just replaced the water pump on my 95 ESi and now the car seems to idle as if it were not firing correctly. it hasn't been started for a month while I've been working on it on and off and now the engine just sounds different. scared to drive it yet. should I assume it's becasue it's been out of commission for so long or is something seriously wrong? could the timing belt be off a notch or two?

i removed the alternator belt and serpentine belt, damper pulley, driver side upper engine mount, power steering bracket, engine mount bracket, timing belt front and back cover, camshaft pulleys, tensioner pulley and tensioner, timing belt, and finally the water pump. Replaced everything with the correct torques and I lined up the timing marks as perfect as I could.

Your timing is off i would bet the farm on it.:p Its kinda tricky on the 420a engines. Check your timing marks again. Good luck to you Sir.

That was my next question. You can be a tooth off and if you are not absolutely careful even 2. Double your checks. Since you didn't remove anything else this is about the only place you can get into trouble. Not to say you got it wrong, but I had to ask.

I see it a lot in here.

Good Luck

that's what i was afraid of. so i go in and adjust the timing now. what's should i do after fixing this so I can start the car and make sure it's aligned properly? can i leave the motor mount, damper pulley, serpentine belt, and alternator belt off and start the car to test it without causing any damage?

Is michael jackson white?..............Yes you can do that.:thumb:

Yes you can start the car with just the timing belt and nothing else on but don't let it run to long because it is running off just your battery and your waterpump isn't running. But I always start cars before putting them back together to insure it's all correct.
