dropped tranny last night to replace clutch, and found the flywheel comes in and out of the motor when attached to the crank, flywheel is bolted down too. the car runs, but runs like ass.

this motor was supposedly just rebuilt with these mods:

Engine Mod list:
2.3L
0.5mm over block, Wiseco pistons, 4G64 crank
Balance shaft delete
ARP head studs, MHI 4 layer gasket

please help me diagnose my problem.

also a friend of mine just said it is possibly the thrust bearing, what all do i need to replace now.. the cars probably been driven on for 2miles with that problem

If you want the quick fix that will last probably bout 20k or so. Just replace the bearings. Thrust bearing included. Long term fix- 6bolt swap or new bottom end. But make sure you mic the crank and make sure it isnt worn out of specs. Crankwalk doesnt happen overnight, its gradual wear. Its probably been like that for a little while now you just didnt notice.

depending on how bad everything is worn, new bearings MIGHT be a quick fix for a very short term. i'd pull the pan and check all the journals on the crank and rods to make sure nothing is screwed up. if there are grooves and scores in the journals, your looking at least at a bottom end re-build.

well all this happened at once, the car makes about 400awhp, i got on it in second gear, hit rev limiter, punched down the clutch and as i shifted it into neutral to decellerate it just starts making the loudest god awful noise.. the noise gets a lil quieter when i press in the clutch... but its pretty bad

where do i get and what type do i need of each.

thrust bearing
main bearings
rod bearings
4g64 crank at a low price

im guessing this is all i have to replace, hopefully....... does anyone know torque specs for bottom end, and can i do this without removing the head?? i dont want to have to get a new HG its already got a good one

as for the bearings i would suggest mitsu, things like bearing etc i dont trust imiation or remanufactored parts. if one of those go, its a lot more work (i just found this out) as for the crank im not too sure. ill do some more searching. as for the torque specs, just do what i did, go out and pick up the chiltons manual on dsm's its filled with tons of information....and very descriptive. also very easy reference for anything mechanical wise you want to know about your car. hope this helps at least a little nit

New bearings won't fix that even short term. Bearing tolerances are measured in thousandth's of inches. You've got at least a quarter of an inch play there. You need to replace the engine with either another 7 bolt that IS good or a 6 bolt.
