Hey all,
I just want to start by saying how much I appreciate this forum, as it has served as an excellent guide for me, especially when I'm having a problem thats not totally black and white . I'm no newbie to dsm's, however one thing I've never had to deal with is catastrophic failure of any engine part. Call me lucky, but for some reason it's never happened.
My problem is this: When I changed my oil last (about 5 days ago) I noticed a decent amount of tiny metal flakes in the pan. I'm talking glitter/dust sized and am a little concerned because I've never noticed them before. I know that over time the bearings in the motor wear and metal is worn away, but could this be an indication of a bigger problem beginning to surface? So far the car runs fine, and has never been starved of oil (changed every 3 months or less) and I havent noticed any accompanying symptoms that point to a spun bearing (ie, knock etc) theres a very faint knock at idle only sometimes and it goes away when rpms and oil pressure increase. Anyone have any experience with this issue? The car is still under warranty, so before I take it in (id rather have my mechanic do the work for a warranty co-pay than buy parts and make time to do it myself) I'd like to get an idea of what problems (if any) could be represented here. Thanks a bunch.
P.S., I couldnt take a picture, however I tried to explain in the best detail I could
