So I'm driving home (1G GSX) and suddenly this electrical burning smell engulfs my interior with white smoke pouring out from behind the dash. CEL comes on, engine dies, cranks, won't start. GREAT! Fried ECU right? But it's not a fishy smell like described when the capacitors leak, more like burned electrical components smell. It's the original ECU (15 years!!!!!)

This happened after I brought it out of a 4 month storage, battery disconnected. While driving these past 2 weeks, it has a subtle buck on part throttle cruising and off throttle cruising in gear. Accelerates strong with no misfires. Could the ISC be the cuplrit of the bucking and did it fry my ECU? On start-up cold, the idle surges until it warms up, but I think that's a separate issue.

Is my ECU fried beyond repair? I've yet to remove it to inspect but I think it's not as minor as leaking capacitors due to the strong electrical burning smell and smoke. The only place I found so far for replacement ECUs is www.ecmtogo.com Anyone have any other places? Thanks.

Check the classifieds here or send a PM to "steve". I've seen 1g ECUs on EBay but I dunno.....I would rather buy from a fellow DSMTuner member, personally :thumb:

you can pick them up at an orielys or autozone..... i got a 90 eprom ecu for $20 i think brand new. a lot cheaper with out eprom.

you mean $200, right? Also, it would not be brand new -- the ones that chain auto parts stores sell are remanufactured/refurbished.

Still $200 is not a bad price.

Theres an ebay company that sells refurbished ecus eprom or not. But if oreilys is selling them for 200 for an eprom that would be the best bet as im assuming they have warrenties. Post some pictures though im sure steve will be able to tell you if its gone or not.
