My 1990 Eclipse gsx just had the ecu burn up, one of the capacitors has burnt a hole in the board, so I figure that I am going to need a new ecu. Does it matter what ecu I get for it, I figure I could use any 1g 1990 turbo awd ecu. Am I correct?

Your going to need a '90 Federal turbo ECU. Either the FWD or AWD will work without you having to modify any of your ignition wiring. Those are MD145903 or MD128625. The California versions will cause you to throw a EGR CEL unless you have a California car.

You can use the later 91-93 Federal turbo ECUs if you convert over to a '91+ power transistor module and run a new wire for the ECU to pick up it's tach pulse from the new PTM.

It's too bad you didn't have the capacitors changed before they blew up your ECU. We've been telling people for 10+ years that it's not a question of if but when will the capacitors go bad.

You are basically correct. You could theoretically use a 91+ ECU as well, but that would require you to do a bit of rewiring (to the tach, etc.). Any Fed. 1990 ECU will work in your car.

All I want to do is to just buy a new in and put it in, no problems. I am new to dsm's and I dont want to have to change any wiring.

Then go w/ the two that Steve listed (MD145903 or MD128625). Look around on the Classifieds. There are usually people selling them. Get an EPROM if you can find it if you're planning on doing some upgrades like DSMLink. Otherwise, a non-EPROM will be fine.

I would recommend taking/sending it to a qualified professional (like Steve, *hint, hint*) before trying to do it yourself, unless you really know what you're doing, and/or don't mind breaking stuff.

Better to get it done right the first time than risk doing it wrong and causing more expensive problems.

By the way, I'm sure you know this already, but if your capacitor burned a hole in your board, you can replace that capacitor all day long, but the board isn't going to do much besides sit there and look at you, and stay broken.

Not unless your running a non-turbo engine in your car.

Just send your ECU to steve for repair instead of buying another ECU which most likely needs to be cleaned up anyway. Steve can probably turn it around in a couple of days and his customer service is second to none.

Thank you for the cross reference, now I know I have a california car, so can I use a Federal ecu on it and get away with it, or do I absolutely have to have a Cali ecu, and also please point me to a place where I can get one that is going to work.

If you have a California car you can use any of the four '90 turbo ECUs as long as your EGR valve and sensor are working.

Your on your own for finding one. I don't have any suggestions for getting a working one.
I'm all out of '90 ECUs.

A word to the wise, See you see, if you go to Auto Zone a ecu is 199.00 plus tax but the problem is that you can never get one quickly from them, on the other hand they are a quite bit more expensive at you Advance auto parts, they are both Cardone rebuilt ecu's, and you can tell Advance to match Auto Zone's price and they will and you will get it overnight..
