Hey everyone, first post up, sorry it has to be a "help me" post, but well i need the help. ive read alot of stuff but im still not sure if my problem is what i think it is. The engine and transmission are from an Evo 1 just so you know, pretty much the same as the DSM awd platform. well About 3 weeks i was down the street from my house the the car stopped working, i let the clutch out and it started to move then i heard this noise and the car didn't move anymore just made noise, kinda like a thumping noise not so much any kinda grinding. so i i was there stuck and i put it in reverse and it started to move back, then i was able to move foward but i had to go like...5 mph or it would do the same thing. so i figured my clutch was burned up, i got a new xact flywheel and act2600, took the old one out....pretty much had nothing on it to catch so i figured that was the problem. put it all back on, didn't put my transfer case on cuz i have a leaking rear seal, took it for a drive and it was good, then i got down t he street to the gas station when it started doing the SAME thing. started making clunking sounds and not moving, check the axles cuz it sounded like that, but it wasn't. well after like...15 minutes i got to my house which usually takes....less then 2 minutes. well i took it for a ride today drive fine down the street then it did the same thing, it seems to be fine till it starts to get hot, so im thinking the viscous coupler is blown out because i read that the "locking abilities the viscous fluid temperature (its viscosity decreases as temperature increases)" so if the VC is bad then it might work for a few minutes till the engine warms up. i had one of my friends who works on transmission for a living come over and i took him for a ride and he said its not the gears or anything like that but something is definatly not working, he thinks that maybe having the Transfer case off may cause it to do this, but he isn't sure due to the fact that he doesn't really work on AWD cars, just FWD or RWD. fluid was changed, all bolts were torqued down, no grinding or anything just that clunking/thumping noise coming from the tranny. axles are good too i checked those, so any ideas would be greatly appreciated, and again i did read up a good deal from the search i did, but im still not sure if its the transfer case being off or the VC is dead. thanks
sorry for the long read!

Don't bump your threads. If no one replies, it means they're not sure and they're passing the problem on to someone who knows.

Does the thumping increase with rpm?

only reason im bumping is due to the fact that it was being pushed down. it almost sounds like the axles are disconnected but ive already checked that many times, but thats what it sounds like.

well i put the transfer case back on since it was off due to a leak, put that back on, it was driving around the neighbor hood and i got on it a little bit in first and it did the same thing, started acting ###. its not a grinding noise and there wasn't any metal in the fluid at all. the feeling is more like the axles are coming loose but thats isn't the case since i can go in reverse with no problems at all, and i checked them a few times. but yea any hard load, it won't do anything, under a slight load like barely pushing the gas it will drive and shift like it should, but i can't push the gas more then like 3/4 of the way or it does it again. im thinking the vicous coupler may be out cuz i read about that on here, what do you guys think?

well i got the viscous coupler off, still unsure if that is the problem or not, there were some small metallic shavings in the fluid but i did grind a few times when the clutch first went in i had it grind due to it being brand new, i had to pump that a few times to get it moving. but there were no large pieces or anything like that. my question now is how do i test this thing? its a mostly solid piece so yea, any help would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks
