ok so, i got a 1993 mitsubishi eclipse, with a 6 bolt 91 eclipse engine. i have had a quiet ticking noise for a long while, but i have been waiting to get my new head finished so i can put that on.

so recently the quiet tick has gotten really loud, i mean to the point that my radio cannot get louder than it. i am scared to drive my baby right now, and if i do, i refuse to rev it over 3000rpm, for the fact that i can FEEL the tick then. i decided one day to be brave and try to rev it higher, 4000rpm :nono: . when i got to 4000rpm, all of a sudden i heard loud metal on metal bangs and hits. then my engine stalled, while i was driving, trying to shift into 3rd. i felt the shifter begin to shake (not typical), then my pedals were vibrating, and the sterring wheel was shaking.

at first i thought i had lifter tick, but that wouldnt cause all of this. then i took off my valve cover and checked my valve train, everything looked ok and nothing was loose. then a friend told me he thought i might have piston knock or piston slap, but my dad, a master mechanic for 20 years, said its not piston knock or piston slap, he said its definitaly something to do with the valvetrain. so i recently have come up the idea that a few of my valves might be kissing my pistons a little. but i wont know until i replace the head.

so i need some advice as to wut you dsm guys think. am i anywhere close to thanks.

I seriously doubt you have valvetrain problems as that would not cause your shifter, or pedals to vibrate or move. Does the car still run and if it does, does it idle properly and seem to free rev ok?

You could have some lower end problems or it could be something with the drivetrain, hence the moving shifter.

If you still think its possibly pistons hitting valves then all you have to do is check your timing marks. If all the marks line up then you can rule that out

Welcome to the world of a chewed up balance shaft bearing. Enjoy your stay.
If it's not the balance shaft bearing, then it's a spun rod bearing. It's NOT the valvetrain.

no, the car idles ok, after you try startin it and crank for god knows how long. anytrhing over 1000rpm, and the click begins.

Rear balance shaft bearing. Drop the oil pan, or drain the oil into a clear container. You'll see bits and pieces of chewed up metal.
