Just installed new exhaust system on 96 Talon N/T last night and now have MAJOR smoking problem. The new system consists of Tsudo header (incl. flex pipe), high flow cat (test pipe), and Tsudo catback.

Prior to installing the exhaust the CEL was on and was diagnosed as a bank-2 02 sensor error. The car also smoked a little before. So I'm sure the 02 sensor is still screwed up. But the car is smoking like crazy now! It's a blueish-grey smoke and is really bad now. There is fog bank behind the car!

Any thoughts or suggestions on what to look for? Would a bad 02 sensor cause the extreme smoking?

Blue is oil. New exhaust systems has oil on the inside of the pipe as to not rust while they wait to get put on, so you'll burn a *little* smoke with a new exhaust....

However, your problems doesn't sound like that. Pull your lower intercooler pipe off and see if you've got a bunch of oil draining out of it. If not, then do a compression test. Also, if you got rid of your 2nd O2 sensor, you need to do the Rear O2 Sensor Eliminator Mod... found HERE

Post back after you pull the pipe off and let us know what you found.

One more thing. How is your PCV routed?

Well, the car is non-turbo, so that eliminates the innercooler/turbo as a problem.

The new exhaust HAS the second 02 port and the sensors IS installed. But like I said earlier, that sensor was throwing a code prior to installing the exhaust. But I thought maybe it was something else causing the code (wiring, clogged cat) because the 02 sensor is fairly new (less than 1 year).

The PCV valve was also replaced not too long ago.

As I said before, the car was smoking a bit before the new exhaust system. It could have either worn valve guide seals and/or worn rings (112,000 miles on engine). But the smoking seemed to get a LOT worse after installing the new exhaust. :(

Yeah, I guess I could have paid attention to your profile... LOL

PCV is good, no turbo so that's out. If the o2 is throwing the code, then you should definately replace it. Test your front o2 also. Your next step would be the compression test.

I agree with ddavisaf about the compresion test. If your rings are letting oil into the cylinder, then that could help explain the burn off. I have a couple of questions for you though. How often do you check the Oil level, and what are the results? How often do you have to put more oil in? What is your gas milage like?

A general question I have is, if your o2 sensor/housing is messed up, could this cause the ecu to think the A/F is lean? This would cause it to throw more gas into the system, which could produce some smoke? I don't know about THAT much smoke... but still some right? Please feel free to correct me on ANY of this. I'm just a rook afterall.. :D

Ok I am not sure if i am missing some humor, do you have a high flow cat or a test pipe. Also sensor 2 is usually used to measure catalytic converter effiency not mess with A/F ratio.

Also a bad temp sensor will will cause it to throw more gas in you should use a logger and find out what the ecu is actually reading.

Do you mean bank1 sensor 2

Well, I did a compression test the other night and got 180, 180, 180, 182. So the compression looks ok. So I assumed that this meant it was probably just some bad valve seals......But, I took it to a local "shop" and the guy said that just by the way it looked, smoking (not only at start up but duruing driving), that he thought it was a ring problem.

He said that there are 3 rings on each piston and one of them is an "oil seal ring" and that one is probably shot. Does this sound right?! He basically said that it's not worth putting the kind of money it would take to fix it into the car. Just put some "stop smoke" stuff in it and keep driving it untill it dies! WTF

It's burning about a quart a week (300-350 miles). OMG

Gas milage is about 21mpg.

It has a test pipe, but the exhaust pipe rear of the test pipe has an O2 bung. The 2nd (downstream) O2 sensor is installed there.

I don't have a logger so I don't know what the heck the ECU is doing. :(

I'm about ready to burn this friggen car down to the ground!!! Everytime I turn around something else goes wrong! I now have 2X more money into fixing crap than I paid for it! AAAARRRRRGGGG!!!!!!!!
