car running like crap

hey guys i need help ASAP bought a 95 gst last week 119*** miles on it everything stock except for intake filter and last night i was driving and stepped on the gass, car would boost but stagger and back fire before going. compression test is good, dunno what itg could be, boost leak? coil pack? wires, plugs? and when it back fires it would blow smoke out the exhaust. neep help soon

Just had the same problem as you minus the smoke. Grab one range colder NGK plugs and gap them at .28 and change your sparkplug wires. When you pull your old plugs check their gap. Ill bet its close to a .40 gap. If that doesnt correct the problem, head to VFAQ, pull their guide and do a leak test. Now my exhaust was black from the fuel not getting burned from a good spark. All my hestitation went away from from new plugs and wires. I changed my plugs when I first bought the car and gapped them correctly but I guess the Arcing caused the gap to spread....it def changed. I had a very similar problem with my car not too long ago. I ended up replacing the fuel filter, and when that didnt fix it, i replaced the spark plugs. After the spark plugs, things cleared up a little but came back within a few days. I then replaced the spark plug wires with OEM replacements and that solved my problem. I would start with the simplest things first. It will save a lot of headache and wasted time and money. -Ryan
