Almost every time i start my car it makes an ugly grinding sound. The last owner said it was the starter. The car doesnt have any problems starting, just an ugly sound from the engine bay. What is it?

It sounds like the starter gear isn't fully disengaging the flywheel. My car would do this in the cold. If you're worried about it, you can replace the starter.

Could be the harmonic balancer (crank pulley). Pop the hood and have a friend start the car and see if you can isolate the noise. Any trouble with drive belts lately? Particularly the alternator belt?

Just got my 92 AWD today, it does the same thing. I've read on it a little, and I think its the starter as well. Its right below the intake manifold, and my dad listened and said that was where the noise was coming from, so I'll prolly put in a new one in the next week. I'll let you know how it goes.

I had the same prblem from mine when I first got it. The bendix in the starter wasnt disengaging so I pulled it off and tore it apart. It had years of oil and slugde buildup causing it to stick. After a good cleaning and some lithium grease, it has been working fine for the past 2 years. It might be worth trying before you spend $ on a replacement.

I had the lower alternator belt tightened up at a clutch install shop recently. Buts it has been doing the grinding sound ever since ive had the car.

This may sound a little woohoo, but i had the same problem, but it was not my starter. My problem was when the engine moves a little, somehow on gods little green earth my t-belt cover touched my t belt untill my revs went down from about 1200ish to 7 or 800ish a few minutes later. Fix? Took the t-belt cover off.
